When you were a kid, do you remember who you looked up to? Do you remember your favorite TV character who you tried to emulate or your favorite movie star who you wanted to be? All of these people who influenced your childhood, your teenagers and maybe even your adult years, are known as mentors. Sure, they may not be direct executive mentors, because you watched them through a screen and they had no idea who you are, but in their way and in their work they have mentored you and taught you things. Mentors are teachers.
They guide you through a process that you may not have had any awareness of, and they can teach you the things that you are looking to learn. If you’re a trainee Dr, then a consultant in a specialty that you are interested in may be a mentor to you because you want to be just like them when you grow into your career. When it comes to executive mentoring, it’s like an agreement where a mentor and a mentee work on a certain goal that is set by the mentee. You work together on the expectations you have for each other and the programme that you create together, and when you have formal mentoring that lasts around a year, informally your relationship can continue.
Mentors can be in any form from Zarif Haque to your favorite author. Really, it’s about what you are looking for from the mentor that matters the most. If you have never had a formal mentor before, you may consider getting one now as you embark on your career or you try to expand your career. If you’re still on the fence about the whole idea, we’ve got some of the reasons below why you need one.
Your mentor will empower you to grow.
The whole point of a mentor is to have somebody who can maximize your potential. Believe us when we tell you that you do have potential to do whatever it is you want to do. Your mentor or your guide is going to open the doors of opportunity for you. They will empower you and encourage you to focus on your goals. Mentors can help you to build up yourself and provide you with ideas and thoughts that can really help you to change the way that you look at the world and how you present yourself to it. When it comes to achieving your objective, your mind will see the possibilities available in you and believe in you even in those moments when you don’t believe in yourself. That comes with quite a bit of power, and it can also help you to develop your confidence professionally.
They will advise you.
If you run into a bit of a brick wall when it comes to your next steps professionally, you can tend to your mentor and get the advice that you need. In fact, their approach to a problem could teach you a whole new way of thinking. Not everybody has the same approach when it comes to their issues, and the advice that they give you could help you to succeed in your career and develop you as a person in ways that you never thought was possible. With that improvement in your problem solving abilities, you’ll be able to find ways to solve your problems and protect yourself from making big professional mistakes that can follow you around for a long time.
Mentors will motivate you.
No matter what it is that you need help with, you can turn to your mentor to ask questions, and they in turn will give you that motivation that you need to feel inspired and like you can hit your goals no matter what. We all feel professionally sluggish from time to time, but that doesn’t mean you have to live in that space. a mentor will motivates you and won’t let you stop until you achieve your goals. This is something that you absolutely do need for success.
They will challenge you.
A mentor is not going to allow you to sit on your laurels and wait for opportunities to come your way. They are going to encourage you to chase the opportunities that you deserve, and they are going to teach you all about why you should go for those opportunities as well as why you deserve them. Challenging yourself continuously is a big part of your career and you should feel more successful when you meet those challenges head on.
