Climate Change is an impending catastrophe that is coming for all of humanity. Our society depends on the climate in a variety of ways from food production to transportation. Even the land we stand on is subject to climate change. Most people live on coasts and with sea level rise, much of the major cities of the world could soon be underwater. As I’ve written before, there are some concerns with the science behind climate change. I even updated the linked essay recently for my new book, “What the F*CK is Going On?” and I was still left with more questions than answers on this topic. However, it is clear that something is changing on our planet and we have to take stock of how our economy works and what we can do to create a more sustainable future. We can improve how we handle freshwater and its distribution and we can handle how we use and distribute energy. Those would be good things for the planet and for public health.
Recently, the Green New Deal has been a controversial topic in Congress. The 14-page resolution proposed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spells out the issues of climate change and proposes some changes to begin the process of changing the American economy to a more sustainable and renewable future. It isn’t a law or even a policy. It’s an acknowledgment of the problem and it is a positive first step to beginning the process.
In this Vox video, they analyze the Green New Deal and it’s principle concerns and what some of the proposals are and how we might get about putting them into practice. It’s a must-watch.
