When you start a company of your own, there’s going to be at least one or two similar competitors out there. Small town restaurants, boutique clothing stores, online shipping platforms – every single kind of business has some level of competition to deal with.
They’re going to cost you exposure, market share, and your bottom line from time to time, and that’s just something you’ll need to cope with! So when you’re coming up with your own business idea, are you sure you have what it takes to beat the competition? It’s all dependent on how proactive you are.
Know Who Your Competitors are
If you don’t know who you’re up against, you’re not going to be able to compete against them very well! So find out who else is working in the sector you’re interested in. Do some research on the finer points of the product you’re coming up with; what similar market entries are out there? Are they patented? And similarly, is their production process intellectually protected? If so, you’ll have to protect yourself legally as well, and ensure you’re not stepping on any toes as you try to establish yourself.
Know What Your Customers Can Afford
If you know what your customers are going to be happy to pay, you’re going to wipe the competition out of the water. This means using tools like an Amazon Repricer to follow market trends, put on frequent sales, and ensure you’re using lower pricing points to your overall advantage. You want to make a profit here, and you don’t want your product to come across as cheap, but an affordable solution to a customer’s problem will always be a very enticing offer!
Know How to Market Your Differences
Being different means being successful in our current global market. This means you’ll want to highlight the way your company is different compared to your competitors. Whether this is the price you sell for, the materials you use, the eco-friendly efforts you put into the process, or the simple stellar customer service you offer, be sure to market it loud and clear. You want customers to know they can come to you for something different, and something ultimately better, and this should inform every single one of the marketing campaigns you put out there.
Know Who You Can Partner Up with
You’ll be surrounded by other small businesses, no matter where you work. Because of this, you should be able to find a beneficial partner or two that can help you establish yourself and vice versa. In the face of overwhelming competition, it’s this kind of coalition that really goes the distance. Strike up chats with other local business owners, keep the conversation going over emails, and try to make the offer enticing for both sides. If you’ve got an idea, don’t be shy about it!
The competition is out there. Make sure you know who they are and how to beat them for success as a small business.
