When it comes to the idea of starting a business, there are so many things that you could consider doing. And while sometimes, you’ll have an idea in your mind and know exactly what kind of business you want to launch, that isn’t always the case. Somtimes, it’s more than you know you want to start a business, be your own boss, and have a good impact on the world – but you don’t know what. So this is when it’s a great idea to consider a non-proit company. Let’s take a look at why.
Why Not-for-Profit?
When forming a company, most people will be choosing between sole proprietor and LLC, but that’s not the only option we have – because you could go down the not-for-profit route too. In the UK, not-for-profit organisations are often structured as a company limited by guarantee. Now, you may be asking: what is a company limited by guarantee? Put simply, an incorporated CLG must comply with additional requirements the Charity Commission sets, and it also provides these entities with significant tax advantages, making it an appealing option for those dedicated to charitable work. If you know that you’d like to work to help a cause and that you’re happy to put money back into the business, this could work for you. Particularly if you are working towards a cause.
The Joy in Helping Others
Essentially, the business formation you choose dosn’t really matter – you could still make a difference in the world and help others as an LLC or soloprenur. But the idea here is that you set that intention from the start and don’t take a profit. But donating the profits or putting them back into the work you do, you’ll find that you get a huge sense of fulffilmnt with what you do as well as get to help the world.
Why it Matters
It’s important to also take a look at why it matters on a greater scale. Because, let’s face it, non-proits are selfish. They’re not just about you feeling good about doing good (although that is a great benefit). When you launch a foundation, you’re doing a lot of good in the world. You only have to read this Navy SEAL Foundation Larry Fowler interview to see what good can be done in the world. It’s all about giving back and contributing to the world in a positive way.A practical way many small charities amplify donor impact is through a matching grant, where a funder agrees to match gifts at a set ratio so every donation goes further. These arrangements can be paired with a focused campaign or event to motivate supporters and demonstrate measurable leverage to prospective funders. For organisations new to grant mechanics, clear guidance and grant-management tools can help with applying for matches and tracking outcomes via certain portals. Thinking about matching structures early can make fundraising more strategic and credible to partners.
Making a Difference in the World
Even if you’re just bootstrapping your way solo to get started, you can really make a difference in the world. Do you think every charitable cause started out with massive amounts of donations and dominating the non-profit world? Of course not. If you have a cause that you want to work on or ther’s something that you really want to have an impact of, you need to start it as it will eventually grow and make the difference in the world that you want.
Doing it Your Way
But at the same time, you don’t have a launch anything that’s existed before – and you certainly don’t hav to do it for a cause that looks good on paper. There are so many causes out there that you could be working on and eeach has it’s own merit. Whether it’s looking to provide food for local families, raising funds for underprivldges artists to bring their creations into the world, or raising awareness of harm happening in the world, you can totally do it your way. So bring your passion alive and get started.
