Peter Zeihan has been talking a lot about deglobalizaton and the changes wrought by the pandemic. Demographics are his main point of concern and the fact that nearly every nation has falling birth rates and collapsing demographics. He is bullish on the United States because of immigration and our more favorable demographics (Millennials are having enough children) but has consigned China to the dust bin along with Germany. His main idea is that globalization was predicated on mass consumption from the Boomers and the US protecting the sea lanes. From his perspective, both of these things are gone and that means there is no structure for globalization. I don’t quite agree with him about the protection of the sea lanes. Ships seem to get about without too much issue. China’s demographic collapse is very real and I’ve been saying the same thing for years. It is one of the reasons I don’t worry about China that much. In this video, we hear his thesis in short and what it means for us moving forward.
