I have reluctantly, with a heavy heart, and an at least partial awareness of the implications reached the conclusion that the United States will and must lead the effort in World War III to defeat Putin. – Mark Halperin

Why is everyone on the war path over Ukraine? Remember when we didn’t like war? The situation in Ukraine is dire. Putin has settled in the east of the country which was already in rebellion since 2014. They have surrounded Donetsk and are trying to take Odessa as of this writing in late May 2022.

I have no idea why so many people think having a third World War is a good idea. The fact that people are opting to solve the Ukraine crisis with a crippling and devastating war truly concerns me. I was recently in a video chat with Brendan Buschi and he posited the idea that since the nuclear threat is already on the table, why not call Putin’s bluff?

Because if Biden gets this wrong, it will devastate the planet?

That seems like it’s not good enough for some people.

I had a Superman of mine unfollow me because “My friends are dying and you don’t want to save them!” (paraphrased). You know what would kill Ukrainians faster than Russian tanks and missiles? Carpet bombing Russian positions around the country with B-52s. Has everyone already forgotten the devastation in Iraq and Afghanistan? I remember when being anti-war was a popular position in this country but somehow in this conflict with Ukraine, everyone is thirsty for war. I think part of it is racial in nature. Nothing gets people’s ire up more than blonde, white girls crying on CNN. However, the fact that people like Mark Halperin and others on Twitter are calling for the United States to go to war over Ukraine is truly concerning.

It will not be a fast war. It will not be like World War II. Russian planes and non-nuclear missiles can easily reach the United States. Americans will die in the conflict. It will not be an “over there” problem. The West Coast of the United States will be vulnerable to direct Russian attacks. If Putin becomes desperate enough he is surely able to put tactical nuclear weapons in the field, irradiating Ukraine and any American troops there. Conventional bombers would bomb American cities. World War III would be devastating for all parties involved. Putin would unleash whatever he has left and would soon take the Baltics and Poland. Putin has already sent missiles to safe-havens in Western Ukraine, punching through the border into Poland would not be that difficult. And even if the Russian military is hobbled by poor planning and bad logistics, DoD would have their hands full trying to analyze every threat. In some ways, this crisis is worse than the Cuban missile crisis.

Quite simply, the calls for war must stop. There is no good reason for the United States to get into a hot war with Russia over Ukraine. We can continue to support Ukraine and honor them for their sacrifice. The Ukrainian military (despite being part of a fascist organization) has done amazing work against the Russian military. The weapons from the West are helping and the sanctions are crippling against Russia. We should continue those efforts. A hot war would cause far more problems than it would solve.
