This comes from one of the best YouTube channels I’ve recently discovered. I’m not a big fan of capitalism as constructed. Capitalism, before industrialization, was a good idea as a counter to mercantilism (buy my book if you want to learn more about all that) but industrialization concentrated the means of production in the hands of those able to concentrate wealth together to organize production and left most people unable to survive without wage-based employment. Over the last 150 years, fewer and fewer people own the means to produce their own wealth and most people are dependent on a job and a wage. This is not how capitalism was intended to function. One of the ways we could reduce wealth inequality is by radically reorganizing the economy around people and the needs of the people rather than merely the needs of those owning capital. I’m a big fan of worker’s co-operatives and other business organizations where the people that do the work own the means of production and own the business. As it turns out, as we learn in this video, worker co-ops are incredibly good at business and even make more money than a normal business. This video goes through all the ways in which normal businesses are actually very had capitalists and how a new model could serve our economy much better.
