I’ve been doing a good deal of research on the interstate system in the United States in preparation for a podcast that I am working on. In this video, we learn about how the interstate system might have connected the United States, it also divided the US and broke the American city. It has enabled car culture; making owning a car a near requirement in all but the largest metros. The interstate plowed through neighborhoods and made them unwalkable. The amount of land required meant that valuable housing and businesses were torn down to make way for the new roads. The interstate system is a tremendous value but it has had some very serious downsides that I have been learning about. In this video, we learn about how the interstate changed the American landscape and the American city.
