While many organizations are adopting the hybrid or completely remote working approach, there are still companies that are embracing the office setup wholeheartedly. While many employees are more productive at home, there are those who have to go back to the office, but it’s to their detriment, especially when it comes to individuals who are allergic to a lot of things. The fact is that whether it’s hay fever season or a mild allergy, that feeling of being congested can make your employees very miserable. So, what should you do to protect your employees from allergies in the workplace?
Address the Infrastructure
The fact of the matter is that you could be working in a building that is still housing a number of potential problems, and as organizations upgrade their facilities to incorporate air conditioning and ventilation, if there are triggers trapped within the structure itself, these need to be addressed directly. This is why it’s important to look at the entire structure of the building and dig deep into the numerous components, such as the envelope, which are the physical components that separate the inside from the outside, such as the walls, roof, and windows, and you can acquire the services of building envelope consultants to help with this.
It is a very time-consuming practice, but if you find that a number of your employees experience a lot of allergies at the workplace but are absolutely fine as soon as they step outside the office, you may want to look at the infrastructure in all of its forms. Also, make sure to clean out the ventilation system because if it hasn’t been cleaned for years, it is only going to be distributing and redistributing allergens around the workplace.
Offer Professional Solutions
Bringing knowledge of allergens into the workplace can make a massive difference to your employees because as soon as they understand the potential triggers, this will help them minimize exposure to allergens and make them more productive individuals. It benefits you to provide a number of professional solutions, whether this is a professional allergist giving consultations in the workplace or having someone deliver workplace presentations on allergens. It may be such a little thing, but it’s not a case of whether people have allergies or not.
You can actually develop more allergies over time, which is partly attributed to things like depleting gut bacteria. It’s also important to provide more information to employees about what they could potentially be allergic to because allergens are not just about airborne particles. It could be related to diet and lifestyle as well. If an employee has a mild allergy to something like milk, probably known as lactose intolerance, which is becoming far more widespread, they will have more information at hand so they can start eating better and making healthier choices.
It is a less-discussed aspect of the workplace, but it is something that should be spoken of more these days because of increased awareness of how gut bacteria can impact every aspect of our lives. But the bottom line is that if your employees have a wide variety of allergies that they don’t know the source of, helping them tackle this issue can make them far better at their job.
