Being in financial difficulty or even in debt is the last thing a fitness company owner wants to think about. I had a client who owned a local gym. He had a great business going with plenty of local clients who were enjoying his classes and individual workouts. However, he had major cash flow problems. We eventually worked them out but it was a tough few months!
Ideally, you would like to see your company develop, wow its clients, and eventually expand into a bigger business. However, if you don’t keep a close eye on your expenditures, you might find yourself in a financial mess. The difficulty with running a health and fitness company is that you have to spend money in order to earn money. It doesn’t matter whether you’re spending money on raw materials for things you make or on products you purchase from suppliers.
Regardless of your approach, money management may be difficult if you don’t maintain your wits about you at all times. Check out these suggestions for keeping your company viable and out of debt.
Clear. Debt. Now.
Seriously. As previously said, you must spend money to generate money in your business, and if you are in debt, you will continue to sink into additional debt if you do not take action immediately. With interest and fees, the small debt can quickly balloon into a major problem and a huge sink of ready cash.
Debt can also accrue if you have money owed to you by customers. If you’re in the medical marijuana business, for example, collecting debts owed might be easier said than done. Cannabiz can collect these debts for you, making it easier to get the money you’re owed and therefore, pay off your debts.
If you have a large amount of debt, it’s a wise idea to consider debt consolidation to put all of your debts into one place, meaning you’ll no longer be hassled by creditors and have the ability to combine them into something more affordable each month.
Reevaluate your expenditures.
Occasionally, money problems arise as a result of company expenses. Examine how you might reconsider and perhaps lower your business’s expenses:
- Look for new vendors of things you need. For instance, if you rely on a certain supplier for your gym supplies, consider negotiating a lower price with another provider.
- Consider basic outgoings such as your monthly power bill for example. Do you think it’s possible to lower that number? Even if it means phoning your service providers and asking for a better price, there is always a method to reduce your outgoings. Most of the time, you will be able to negotiate a business rate on utilities, so be sure to emphasize that your location is a commercial one.
- Reduce employee overtime. While the labor must be done, paying unnecessary compensation can quickly add up.
- Paying for employee meals or workshop rooms for sessions? Consider reducing your spending on these items so that you can get your company back on track and soaring rather than sinking. Even if it’s just temporary, it will help.
- If you’re paying bills on a quarterly basis, consider switching to monthly payments to make them more manageable. If you ask, most service providers will switch you to monthly pricing. Paying monthly also means you’ll receive a better deal.
It’s important to think about how you spend your money with your health business so that you don’t end up in debt again.
