Crested Butte is a beautiful town in the Colorado Rockies that boasts a great lifestyle, skiing, and beautiful views of the mountains. For a long time, it was a ski-bum sort of town for folks to get out of civilization and live closer to nature. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Crested Butte has had a housing boom as workers have left the cities and fled to the country for greener pastures (literally). As remote workers have arrived at Crested Butte, the housing shortage has pushed out working-class folks who have been forced to live in their cars or in tents. Obviously, there’s a push and pull between the land-owners, the local workers, and the new neighbors. Ultimately, the question remains: where will the working class live? This is just one of the many new problems we’re having in a post-Covid environment.
In this video from Vice, we’re going to do a deep dive on the situation Crested Butte and the center of the conflict.
