Tech Will Not Save Us

According to Peter Zeihan, innovation and new technology are not coming to save us, instead we're going to have to make some hard choices on how to proceed.

As readers know, I’m not a huge fan of Peter Zeihan, mostly because he does my job but not as good as I do it and I resent that. I respect quality. In this upload from him, during one of his many hikes across Colorado, he talks about the upper end of innovation. Most problems we have faced as a species, especially in the last 150 years or so, have been solved by some new invention (better living through chemistry!) but he posits that innovation isn’t going to save us from our present problems. On this, I tend to agree with him. Technology can solve only so many problems. He thinks there is an upper end of innovation and we’ve about reached it.

When it comes to chips, we are about to hit the physical limit of what transistors can do for us. Quantum computing may solve this problem but that is awhile off yet. Energy is a big focus but escaping oil and the lifestyle it has afforded the planet is not as easy as we thought it would be. Then there is de-growth which is its own problematic solution. There is no shortage of problems to solve and it seems like we are going to have to make some hard choices moving forward.

In this video, we learn more about what this means for us and our problems and what Zeihan thinks is the next move for humanity and how we might adapt to our present circumstances.
