I’ve covered racial issues for a long time. One of my first investigation journalism pieces took place on race and I interviewed card-carrying racists. I wanted to understand their point of view. In this interview from Soft Underbelly, we meet an Imperial Wizard of one of the most famous organizations in the country: The Klu Klux Klan. The history of the Klan is fascinating and begins in the days after the Civil War during Reconstruction. The Klan died out for a while only to have a renaissance beginning in the 1920s that extends to today. This interview looks at the totality of race in America from the Klan perspective and why they want to live separately from other races and cultures.
