Keeping Your Employees Safe At Work

HomeMoney & EconomyBusinessKeeping Your Employees...

Health and safety is one of those really important matters that you need to ensure you are taking care of as best as you can in any workplace and any place of business. As long as you are doing that, it’s going to mean that you are satisfying not just the legal responsibility of your business, but its moral and ethical responsibility too. After all, you really don’t want to be responsible for anyone getting seriously hurt or suffering poor health as a result of working for your company.

So how can you make sure that is truly avoided? In this post, we are going to take a look at some of the major ways in which you can and should keep your employees safe at work. Some of these might be obvious and some less so, but the main thing is that you are aware of them and putting into place any that you have not yet made sure of in your company.

Carry Out Risk Assessments

First of all, you need to make sure that you are carrying out risk assessments of a number of areas in the business and throughout the workplace. There are quite a few of these that you have to think about, such as one for fire safety, one for electrical safety, and so many others besides. You are probably already aware of many of them, because they are the kind of legal duty that is really drilled into you when you first get into business.

But make sure that you really do them, and that you take it seriously. If you are carrying out risk assessments well enough and you follow them to the letter, it is going to mean that you are doing perhaps the single most important thing you can for keeping your people as safe as possible. Clearly, then, it’s genuinely really wise to make sure that you are doing it.

Hire A Professional Security Team

Next up, it’s really important to make sure that you have a professional security team looking after your employees and your workplace itself. There is something about having a professional security team in place which just makes it so much easier to protect everyone, so that is really one of those things you won’t want to overlook here. Of course, the quality of that team is really important too, so it’s something you’ll want to spend time researching before you land on one choice.

But as long as you find a security team that you can trust, one that has a great deal of experience and understanding and skill, everyone is going to not only feel a lot safer, but genuinely will be so much safer. You’ll have far fewer problems relating to people’s security, and this is absolutely something that you are going to be really happy about – as will all of your employees, and any guests that you might have in the building too.

So don’t delay – get a professional security team on board today.

Watch Out For Hidden Dangers

A lot of workplaces have all sorts of hidden dangers, and it’s going to therefore be really important that you are looking out for these as well. After all, because they are hidden, you are not necessarily always going to be aware of them, and it takes some forward thinking to be able to look into some of these. So what kinds of hidden dangers might we be talking about here?

A good example is when you renovate the office only to discover that there was asbestos behind the walls. You’d be surprised how many buildings actually still have this substance, and it is one of the most toxic things that a building can have. As well as putting people at serious risk of being in harm’s way, if you are found to be responsible here you might even face a mesothelioma lawsuit, so it’s beneficial for you that you are dealing with this as well.

There are other such hidden dangers as well, such as mold, so it’s really important that you keep your senses wide open to these kinds of things.

Train Your Employees

The better trained employees are in matters of health and safety, the healthier and the safer they are going to be – it really is that simple. You have a duty to ensure your employees are fully trained in health and safety, and to refresh that training as often as necessary – there are different rules for the different modules that you have to teach them, so make sure that you are aware of those.

As well as the basic training, there is training in how to use machinery and other specifics that you might need to consider as well. Just make sure that they are well clued up on everything they need to know.

Incident Logging

Another thing you have a legal duty to do is to have a system for logging incidents and near-misses that happen in the workplace. This is also a way of protecting your people, because it means that you are going to have a fuller and better understanding of what led to the incident, and that helps you to put in place protections to avoid it happening again in the future. So all in all, it really is useful and very important to make sure that you are doing this.

The system should be firmly in place and it needs to be something that people can easily use as well. If it is not, then it’s effectively not going to work, and you’ll find that you are much less likely to be above board with things. So make sure that you are doing all you need to in order to keep your incident logging up to date. That is really going to help a lot.

If you have done those essential things, you are going to find that your employees are much safer at work. That’s a great position to be in, for them and you.
