Whether you’ve received a sudden and unexpected inheritance, a workplace bonus or even a swift bit of luck on the lottery, any financial gain can and will feel like a blessing. However, it’s vital that you make thoughtful and careful decisions about how you can use this new source of money.

Rather than rushing into spending it on something new, you have to consider ways to use it wisely. You want to be smart about your financial future, and it’s wise to secure your finances and enhance your wellbeing, too. So, here are five things that you can do with a sudden windfall of cash:

1. Convert it.

Did you know that you can convert financial wealth to non-financial investment? You might be tempted to splash the cash immediately but if you invest in your personal growth or secure your future, you can give yourself some lasting value. Non-financial investments include things like health, education and personal relationships being invested in.

2. Pay off some debt.

If you have any credit card balances or student loans, paying these down is so important. If you have the money and you didn’t expect it, paying off your debts will help you to free up your cash properly. Clearing debt also boosts your credit score and opens up further opportunities for better finances in the future. When you pay some money down, you make a dent in your owing and that can take the pressure off.

3. Start building an emergency fund.

Another thing you could do with a windfall is to start putting money away for an emergency fund. Having up to six months of living  expenses saved up can make all the difference to your financial stability and you are then prepared for any curve balls that can help.

4. Work on investing.

Speak to a financial professional to invest in a diverse portfolio. When the debts are paid and your emergency fund is working properly, you can achieve better, more long-term financial goals like retirement funds, buying a house or even starting a business. Before you dive into investments, get the right advice so that you know what will work better for your future.

5. Give a little back.

You can choose to make a difference to the lives of others when you come into unexpected money. Consider using a little of your windfall to give back to others and you can even invest in and support causes that matter to you. Charitable donations are good for you and for those you have an impact on, and you can help people in need in your life, too. Again, get some financial advice before you do this because you may have to ensure that you have support so you’re not just handing out cash to all and sundry.

When you come into a wedge of money, knowing what to do with it makes all the difference to your future and to your present circumstances. You can benefit and so can your family – but your future is what matters most of all.
