You might have been working in an office for so long that you have never worked from home. However, the onset of Covid-19 put a sudden stop to this and most employees were encouraged to work from home. This was to prevent people from working in close contact and spreading the potentially deadly virus. It can seem daunting working from home but it is simple and easy to do with this helpful guide.
Space Available
When you work from home you might think that you need to have a huge space available to call your office. This will help you out slightly more if you did but it is no trouble at all working from your sofa, bed, or kitchen table. There is no rule book out there that tells you how to layout your working space so you have to do whatever feels right. Ideally, you will have a space you can go to work and then close everything off at the end of the day. This separates the work/home life and needs to happen as otherwise you will always be stuck in work mode and this can affect your mental health.
Furniture
Next, you need to think about the type of furniture you are using for your home office. It won’t be comfortable or sensible to use a kitchen chair for example when you are working for long periods. For a start, your body won’t be in the correct position and you will be supporting the majority of the weight on your arms, this can quickly lead to RSI. Your workplace might be sympathetic to your situation and deliver you a chair to use while working from home. They may not deliver a desk for you to work at so this is something you will need to figure out. Ideally, everything you use should be supportive and ergonomic, including your keyboard and mouse. If you are looking for a great company to use for office furniture then Civic Australia can help you with this.
Distractions
Unfortunately, when you are working from home there are likely to be some distractions throwing you off your pace. They are very different from office distractions and can come in the form of the postman knocking on the door, or children barging into your workspace. It is important that if you have other people at home they are aware that you are working and to not be disturbed.
You need to be able to stay productive when you work from home and this won’t happen if you are faced with many distractions. Have a sign-out or on the front door stating you don’t want to be disturbed. Many productivity apps can help you stay alert and focused, these silence incoming notifications on your tech devices so they aren’t pinging every couple of minutes.
Clutter
Finally, when you are working from home you might inevitably have a lot of files and paperwork laying around. However, a cluttered desk can lead to a cluttered mind so it is important that you file your things away so they are not in your way. You can invest in filing cabinets or secure boxes to store things in.
