Winter is here and many of us are finding the weather is worsening already. The temperature is going to drop and we’re going to face harsher conditions, including ice, sleet, snow, rain and wind. This is inconvenient, but it does make those of us with our own cars happy to be able to get straight in our vehicle and directly out at our destination, rather than having to wait around for public transport options (which can be notoriously unreliable during the winter months) and walking between public transport stops. Of course, your car is going to need some care that is niche to the season. Here are some suggestions to take the best possible care of your car over the coming months.
Carry Out Repairs
Your car will experience wear and tear over time. This is just part and parcel of using your vehicle on a day to day basis. Eventually, wear and tear will become damage that simply needs to be repaired. You can often see what repairs your car needs carried out, as lights will flash up on your dashboard alerting you to issues. You should also make sure that your car has an annual MOT and service, where professional engineers and mechanics will be able to take a look at its overall state and let you know what needs to be repaired and replaced. You can often get secondhand parts from car wreckers for a reduced cost. Have repairs carried out as soon as possible. If you leave repairs for a long time, the damage will simply get worse or can spread to other parts of your vehicle, leaving you with an even larger bill to take care of.
De-icer
You should make sure that your car is topped up with deicer. This is a super concentrated, water-free formula that works to quickly clear frost, ice or snow from your windscreen without re-freezing in the process. This is particularly useful when you get into your vehicle in the mornings, after it has been out building up frost and snow over the evening, or following a shift at work when your car may have been sat unused throughout the day. You can also invest in windscreen scrapers to help remove ice and snow quickly and easily. Just make sure that they are specially desgined for use on car windscreens to prevent damage.
Check Your Tyre Pressure
Your tyre pressure can change with the temperature, so make sure to check your vehicle manual to determine what pressure your tyres should be at, and adjust the levels in your own tyres to match. This may involve putting air in or letting air out. Check your tyre pressure regularly throughout the winter. It really will make all the difference to your safety and driving performance.
These are just a few pieces of guidance that should help you on your journey to taking proper care of your car this winter!
