Riding a bicycle is certainly one of the most challenging ways to get around any city. While some cities around the world, such as Amsterdam, have an infrastructure that puts bikes first, others are much more focused on making things better for cars. Even when there are bike paths and routes available, they don’t always work the way that they’re meant to or provide enough safety. But even if a city isn’t set up for cyclists, it doesn’t stop people from riding.
Cycling can be a fast, efficient, and eco-friendly way to get around. It’s also excellent for helping you keep fit, especially if you spend a lot of your time behind a wheel or sitting at a desk. However, if you want to navigate the city by bike, you need to be prepared to do it in a safe and efficient way.

Be Prepared to Ride Defensively
Some cities have very safe cycle paths, where you can happily ride without thinking too much about your safety. Others make it easier for bikes to ride on roads or have a culture of protecting cyclists. However, not all cities are set up for riding bikes. Sometimes you have to be prepared to ride defensively if you want to stay safe on the roads. This means being extra vigilant and always being aware of your surroundings. You need to watch what other road users are doing, be clear about what you’re doing, and try to plan ahead. It can take some time to build your confidence, but it’s important not to allow yourself to be intimidated by others on the road.
Make Use of Bike Lanes
Where there are bike lanes, and they’re safe to use, try to make use of them as much as possible. Bike lanes can separate you from the rest of the traffic, and might even take a different route than the main roads. They can allow you to cycle faster and stay safe while you’re on your bike. However, you might need to assess the safety of a bike path before using it. Some bike paths might not be as safe as they’re intended to be. Some cyclists may even prefer to ride on the road if they feel that the bike path doesn’t offer them the protection they need.
Go Electric
Cyclists can cover a decent amount of distance. They might not be as fast as cars or other motor vehicles, but you could get up to around 20mph if you’re an experienced cyclist. Of course, other factors come into play too, including road conditions and the weather. But if you’re looking for a way to go faster while also saving your energy, an electric bike is the way to do it. It gives you an extra boost, which is especially useful for getting uphill.
Choosing the right electric bicycle is important. You want one that works for your needs, but it may also need to comply with certain laws. When you’re looking at electric bikes, the battery is going to be one of the most important things you consider. You’ll need to think about the battery type, voltage and power output, size, and more. Find out more about how to choose the perfect battery from Electric Bikes Tips. You can even get a kit to convert your normal bike into an electric bike if you don’t want to have to buy a brand new bike.

Plan Your Journeys
The best way to get around any city by bike is often to get familiar with the city. Knowing where you can find the best bike paths and which routes to take can really help you out. If you plan a journey in advance, you can feel much more confident about completing it. You’ll have your route mapped out and understand where you might need to be particularly careful or even dismount if necessary. There are lots of useful tools for planning bike rides and you can even use Google Maps to get a good look at what it all looks like.
Wear a Helmet
There is a lot of debate about whether wearing a bicycle helmet is necessary. Some suggest that it might make you less safe because drivers will be less careful if they see cyclists are wearing helmets. However, you can come off your bike whether you’re wearing a helmet or not. Even if there was a slightly increased chance of an accident while wearing a helmet, the helmet gives you extra protection. You might want to consider wearing other protection too, such as knee or elbow pads, although most people don’t feel that it’s necessary.

Carry a Repair Kit (Learn How to Repair Your Bike)
You can expect to come across various hazards while cycling through a city, including things like broken glass. Getting a puncture is to be expected at some point, and you don’t want to be taken by surprise. That’s why it’s important to carry a puncture and repair kit so that you can fix your bike if you need to. Of course, there’s no point in carrying the kit if you don’t know how to use it. Consider taking a class in bike repair and maintenance or looking up some resources online so you can teach yourself some skills.
Secure Your Bike
Don’t forget to think about how you’re going to secure your bike. This might depend on where you’re going. If you’re mainly cycling to work, you might have somewhere to store your bike. Foldable bikes are particularly easy to take inside and stash somewhere safe. However, you’ll need a lock if you want to park your bike outside. There are all kinds of locks to explore, including smart locks that you can connect to your phone. But it’s also important to think about where you leave your bike if you want to keep it secure. Choose somewhere well-lit where there are lots of people.
Getting around any city by bike can be tough, but it has plenty of benefits too. Just remember to stay safe while on the road.
