Update from Cameron

Happy Saturday everyone! No eulogies this week (thank god) but it has been an interesting week in the headlines. This was a busy one over at SOOPMedia with a lot of significant changes, and I’m really excited for some things we’ll be offering soon. I’m still catching on interviews, but this week we did have a great interview with Anne Marie Waters, so make sure to check that out below. I spoke with the Commission of Health and Human Services for the state of Tennessee this week, and we had a fascinating conversation about the fiscal conservative case for efficiency in the social safety net. That will be coming out soon!

Let’s dive into the headlines.

The News Narratives of the Week

Don’t forget to join me on Monday for The Cameron Journal Newshour! We will have a special guest in the 2nd half of the show this week, so make sure to come on by!

International News

This week, South Africa is hosting the G-20 summit (minus the United States). There is much talk about development within the world’s growing economies, and one country is on everyone’s lips: China. Trump’s moves internationally have left a giant hole in global politics, and the Chinese are all too happy to start filling it. Climate change and green technology are also hot topics as China leads the world in new, cleaner technology and developing countries are sucking up Chinese technology and products. If the future is electric, China is all set to power it.

Trump met with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia this week and criticized a reporter for asking about Jamal Khashoggi. The big narrative this week was Saudi Arabia’s lack of cash. Oil prices have been down and while the Riyadh has traditionally used check-book diplomacy to achieve its goals, MBS arrives this week with a little less cash in the bank and so if Trump was looking for more money, HRH might respond with “no sale.”

All the while, a new peace plan for Ukraine is on the table that cedes all territories currently held by Russia and had Ukraine pull back from some of the areas currently in conflict. It was a busy week internationally, but things aren’t going so great domestically.

MTG, Maga, and Epstein Files

Today, Marjorie Taylor-Greene, the Georgia firebrand congresswoman, announced that she is resigning in January, before the end of her term because of her dissatisfaction with the GOP and the lack of progress on affordability for everyday Americans. I can’t help but wonder if that’s not emblematic of a bigger problem. MTG and Trump have been inextricably tied together, and he removed his endorsement from her over recent comments. If Trump is losing MTG and couldn’t even pressure Lauren Boebert to stop the Epstein files release, what does this all mean for Trump and MAGAWorld more broadly?

Meanwhile, Congress voted to release the Epstein files this week and the Senate went along with it using unanimous consent instead of routing the whole thing through committees and such. It is quite a bit of turn about considering how Republicans the White House ran on releasing Epstein and then didn’t want to release the files, claimed that the list of clients didn’t exist and now AG Pam Bondi has 30 days to release everything with a few redactions to protect the innocent. We’ve also recently gotten access to 20k documents from the House Oversight Committee and some emails. The most fascinating of these, is the emails between Steven Bannon and Jeffrey Epstein, where Epstein admits that he has everything to take down Trump because of him going to the island on the Lolita express.

Between immigration, cost-of-living and the Epstein files release, there are some fissures opening up in MAGAworld. And I doubt that’s just narrative. It is obvious that Trump isn’t quite as aligned with his party or his base as he once was. Now, that being said, Trump’s political instincts are unmatched. He is willing to turn on a dime when he thinks things aren’t going his way. I think this fracturing within the GOP is normal and anticipated; however, it is interesting that it is happening so early in the 2nd term. Trump and company haven’t been in power for a full year yet and unhappiness is already spreading around the party, especially on immigration and the H-1B visa situation and Trump’s recent comments on why we still need talent from overseas.

I think two things are happening within MAGA. The first is that the big donors are looking at taking back control of the party. The rumor that the Bush family is looking at “taking back control” is only a rumor but a powerful one. Trump was not invited to former Vice President Dick Cheney’s funeral this week. It sends a message that the age of Trump in the GOP is coming to an end. The second is that everyone is looking to the future prospects of the party, both inside MAGA and outside of it. There are extremists who think Trump isn’t going far enough and people who want to get back to business as usual (before 2016). What will be interesting is if this extends through to the mid-terms. If it does, Trump will be entering his lame-duck portion of his presidency sooner than we think.
