When it comes to men’s fashion, boots are often the star players. They’re so striking, and everything else in the outfit seems to play second fiddle to them.

But if you’re honest, do you know your boot styles?

Probably not.

Fortunately, this post is a primer. We run through the various styles on the market for men, why you need them, and which occasions they work best for. By the end, you should feel like an expert!

Cowboy Boots

Cowboy boots, as you can probably guess, are boots that mimic the iconic Western style from the US frontier. These usually have low heels, square toes, beautiful stitching and sometimes bells and whistles that add more to the aesthetic.

Many people like wearing cowboy boots because they make a statement. Men who are prepared to don these shoes often have an edge, but are still comfortable in high society.

Usually, you’d wear cowboy boots for line dancing and rodeos. However, these days, they also go nicely with casual wear, like jeans, elevating the outfit, especially when worn alongside other accessories.

Work Boots

Work boots are another style worth exploring. These are often heavy-duty and made from water-resistant leather for enhanced performance in challenging conditions.

These boots make sense if you’re the sort of man who is always working outside or moving from job to job. They’re essential for cold weather and work well when paired with bomber jackets that are being worn for fashion purposes. Use them for hiking, work or just casual wear.

Indy Boots

Indy boots are also a style worth exploring and knowing about. These boots often have ankle-high lace-up and impressive stitching around the vamp. Most are made of leather, although you can get luxurious suede versions.

The best indy boots are hand-made from natural materials. These last a long time and can provide additional comfort. You can wear them while walking through cities, going to work meetings, or mingling with people at social events.

Brogues are another famous boot category every man should have in his wardrobe. These have decorative perforations (called broguing) which set them apart from other options on the market.

Usually, you’d pair brogue boots with suits. However, they can also work with more casual looks if you want something that looks chunkier.

Smart-casual in the fall months is another option. These boots help you look your best when you’re not sure what you should be wearing.

Derby Boots

If you’re looking for something slightly dressier, then classic Derby boots or shoes are an option. These usually come in polished leather with an ankle-high shaft.

Mostly, you’d use these for formal occasions when sneakers and loafers don’t make the grade. However, as with many of the shoes and boots on this list, you can pair them with jeans as well.

Most men go for dark brown coloration as it tends to be the most versatile. However, if you have the budget, you could go for other colors as well, pairing with roll-neck sweaters and wool trousers.
