Some people are just really hard to buy for, and it’s not because they’re fussy or don’t like presents – it’s because they already have everything they want. Or worse, they’ve bought it for themselves before you even had the chance. That can be so annoying, and it makes things so much harder when it comes to finding the ideal gift.
And when that person happens to be your partner, your dad, your brother, or someone else you really care about, it can start to feel like a bit of a mission because you want to get them something good and something that actually feels thoughtful, but how do you even begin? With that in mind, keep reading to find out more about how to make things easier when it comes to buying a gift for someone who usually buys everything for themselves.
Start By Forgetting The Obvious
This might sound strange, but the first thing to do is take a step back and forget the typical gift ideas – we mean the ones that are part of every list, and the ones that seem obvious, because they’re the ones that he probably already owns.
That means no gadgets, no socks, no aftershave sets, and so on. Those things might still be useful, but they won’t feel very personal, and what you’re really trying to do here is find something he didn’t realise he wanted until he opened it. That usually means going a bit sideways. Something connected to a hobby, but not the main thing, or something small that adds to what he already enjoys. Basically, just something he’d never think to buy for himself.
Think About What He Talks About
This is a surprisingly good trick when you’re stuck – most people have things they say they’ll try one day, or talk about doing, but never quite get around to. That could be anything from getting back into an old hobby to starting something totally new, but there’s sure to be something.
The point is, if there’s something you’ve heard him talk about – even just in passing – that he hasn’t actually done yet, that’s a great place to look for a gift idea. It doesn’t need to be big or expensive, it just needs to be something that makes him smile and feel like you were really paying attention.
Upgrade Something He Already Uses
If he’s the kind of person who knows what he likes and sticks to it, it might not be about introducing something new – it might just be about making what he already uses feel a bit more special.
So maybe he always cooks with the same old tools, so what if you got him something a bit more solid and well made? Or maybe he’s had the same weekend bag for the last decade, and it’s held together with tape – a new one, in a style he’d actually like, could be a great option.
You could even go with something more specific and personal, like a handmade coffee scoop, a better set of earphones, or even a well-crafted hunting knife if he’s into camping or the outdoors. It’s all about the upgrade and giving him something that fits into his life but feels just a little bit more special than what he’d pick up for himself.
Go For An Experience Instead
Sometimes the best gift isn’t a thing at all, it’s something he can go and do, either alone, with you, or with someone else he’d enjoy spending time with. And again, this doesn’t have to mean something huge like a weekend away or a fancy dinner (though those can be lovely too). It could be a workshop or class, a guided walk somewhere, a tasting event, a tour of something interesting, or a day where someone else does the planning and he just gets to enjoy it.
This is especially good if he’s the kind of person who says he doesn’t need anything because instead of giving him more stuff, you’re giving him a memory, and those are usually harder to forget.
Personalise Something
Personalised gifts can be great, but only if they’re done right. A huge printed photo on a cushion isn’t going to be everyone’s style, but something small and thoughtful, where the personal touch is part of it, can work really well.
That could include things like initials etched into a wallet or notebook, a keyring made from something meaningful, a playlist you put together with a note explaining why you chose each song, a photo printed properly and framed in a way that fits the room, and so on. These kinds of gifts might seem simple, but they’re often really loved.
Include A Note
It’s such a small thing, but it really does matter. A handwritten note – even if it’s just a few lines – can change the feel of a gift completely, especially when you’re giving something practical or minimal because it adds the meaning. And for someone who already has everything, sometimes the best gift isn’t the object at all, it’s knowing that someone sees them and knows them and actually thought of them.
So don’t skip the card, and don’t just write “Happy Birthday” or “Love you.” Say something real and meaningful and it’s going to upgrade the gift, no matter what it is, into something even better.
Don’t Overthink It
The truth is, buying a gift for someone who already has everything will probably feel tricky no matter what, but the pressure to get it exactly right can sometimes make you forget that the whole point is just to make them feel appreciated.
So if you’ve tried your best, if you’ve thought about what he’d like, if you’ve picked something that feels like it came from the heart, then you’ve probably already done a better job than you think. And remember, you don’t need to do something impressive or expensive, you just need to make him smile, and that’s going to be enough.
