Research the costs involved
Once you know what you want, research how much it’s likely to cost. Look up average prices for materials, tradespeople, and fittings, and don’t forget to factor in hidden extras like delivery fees or waste removal. Getting multiple quotes from contractors will give you a better idea of what’s realistic for your budget and what you need to spend in the different areas. Make sure you look up reviews for people as well, as if someone is ridiculously cheap, you might not be getting as good a service, or the materials might not be made to last.
Think about cryptocurrency
If you are currently invested in cryptocurrency, you can look into smart contacts which are a super secure way to get the work done with contractors for your home and use your crypto too. Tech like ethereum dapps is more intelligent than ever and smart contracts are a key feature of ethereum. A piece of code that lies on blockchain, it’s beneficial as it eliminates the need for intermediaries like banks or lawyers to enforce agreements. Smart contracts have the ability to process payments on a second-by-second basis and make the process (and the budgeting even easier.
Prioritise the most important projects
Not every improvement has to happen at once. If you’re on a tighter budget, prioritise the projects that will make the biggest difference, whether that is fixing something essential, like a leaky roof, or investing in a kitchen update that will add long-term value to your home. Make a list of what the different costs would be for the different projects at hand, so you can get a realistic idea of what to spend and what you can afford at different times.
The last thing you want is to spend all of your money on buying accessories for a space, or fitting new carpets in rooms that might not need it right at the moment, when another room is looking very neglected and in need of more structural and long-term amendments. Make a list, draw up how much you might need to spend on each room, and consider what you can afford and when. This can really help you to visualize what needs to be done and give you a timeline of when the works can take place.
Keep track of your spending along the way
There is no denying just how expensive renovations can be, and they saw that no matter how much you want to try and budget and think you’ll spend, you need to add on at least another 20%. This is because no matter what you do, things always crop up along the way that require additional funds – whether it’s additional labor time, more materials, or to fix something like a burst pipe, rot in the floorboards, or fixing damp that might have showed up that you didn’t know was there before.
Costs can also soon ramp up as you need to buy additional things, so make sure you keep track of what you are spending. It might seem you are just spending the odd amount here and there, but by adding it into a spreadsheet and keeping track of every little thing you pay for along the way, it is much more manageable, and you aren’t worrying as much about going over what you want to spend. You can see if things are getting too costly and you need to rein it back in, or if you have additional funds to spend on things like accessories when it comes to this part.
Expect the unexpected
One of the main things you need to do when renovating your house is expect there to be unexpected costs that crop up along the way. There are so many things that can crop up and as long as you’re prepared, it doesn’t need to be a big issue. Have a reserve fund in place for anything that needs to be paid for, as the last thing you want is for the works to stop as you can’t afford to fix an issue that needs sorting. You should also expect times to be longer than you get quotes, so factor this in too!
Shop smart
If you shop smart, you can get discounts on absolutely everything. From your kitchen worktops, to flooring and shelves for the wall, it’s all about being savvy. There are many ways you can shop smart, including waiting for sales to pick up things (such as black friday or boxing day discounts). You should also check out thrift shops, marketplaces and second hand stores to see what treasures you can find. This means you can get the item you want, but at a fraction of the price which is always great for helping you to budget!
These are just a few things that can help when it comes to budgeting for home improvements. While it might not be the most exciting part of the process, having your finances in order is the foundation of any successful project. By planning ahead, setting priorities and building yourself a financial cushion, you can enjoy a stress-free renovation journey that is much easier than it would be otherwise.
