Figuring out how to look younger at every age is challenging, even for the most dedicated men. It’s not something that happens automatically. The good news is that there’s quite a lot you can do about the aging process. You don’t necessarily have to wind up looking like everyone else in your cohort.
So, what’s the plan? How can you make yourself look significantly younger? Let’s take a look at the actions you want to pursue by age bracket.
Building A Foundation In Your 20s
The whole purpose of your 20s is to build a foundation that will keep you looking younger and healthier throughout adult life. If you can get the basics right at the start, you should find that you achieve significantly improved results as the years go by. For some men, time almost seems to stop entirely.
Start with your skin. You want to get into the habit of applying an SPF from the outset. According to research, something like 80% of skin aging is due to the action of the sun, so you’ll need to avoid this if you can.
You should also be getting into the habit of cooking and eating the best foods. A lot of young men eat junk and then wonder why their health isn’t as good as they’d like it to be. But if you can get more vegetables and proteins in your diet, then you may find that you wind up doing better overall.
For exercise, the most important thing is getting into the habit and building a strong foundation. The muscle and bone you build in your 20s will continue to serve you for the rest of your life.
Maintaining Youth In Your 30s
Once you’ve built a strong foundation in your twenties, the goal should be to maintain it in your 30s. You want to ensure you’re doing everything you can to avoid the development of fine lines and wrinkles, which is common around this age.
If you really look after yourself, a lot of these issues will be minimal. However, if you don’t manage things like stress or stay active, you could run into problems.
Therefore, focus on doing a mix of training and exercises to keep fit. Try combining different options, like HIIT and yoga, so you are constantly asking your body to do different things.
Also, look for ways to systematically reduce stress in your life. If you spend your entire 30s worrying about money or responsibilities, it will eventually take its toll on your health and life.
Finally, take care of your hair. As a man, it will usually start to thin in your 30s. Look into possible hair restoration as these treatments can give you a lot of confidence and encourage you to continue focusing on your health.
Counteracting Aging In Your 40s
During your 40s, the aging process begins to ramp up and you may notice physical changes quickly. This is the point in life where collagen production starts to sink and you begin to transition to middle age.
The goal here is to manage the aging process in a way that you find acceptable. A lot of people start with the proper skincare, like peptides and acid peels. These are great if you want to enhance skin cell turnover over time, keeping skin looking supple and clear.
You also need to look at changing up your exercise routine to focus more on your core. A lot of men in their 40s wind up with a “dad bod” because they gain weight in their middles, and that reduces their fitness levels.
For mental sharpness, it’s a good idea to read books or listen to podcasts. These keep the mind active and prevent you from becoming complacent.
During your 40s, it is a good idea to double-down on the healthy foods in your diet. You don’t want to make things like ice cream a daily treat. It should be something you only consume on your birthday.
If you can change your clothes to reflect your advancing years, that’s also a good idea. Updating your wardrobe helps you to fit into your new role and learn to accept it.
Embrace Refinement In Your 50s
Once you reach your fifties, you will usually witness significant signs of aging. However, there are still things that you can do to stave it off and prevent it from becoming something that takes over your life.
For example, many men move to low-impact training at this stage of life. The idea is to continue to exert your muscles but to do it in a way that avoids any damage to the surrounding tissues, like cartilage and joints.
During this phase, you also want to start thinking about how you can leverage nutrition for longevity. For example, you might want to consume more antioxidants, like walnuts and fish, and focus on things like berries and spinach. These foods all have excellent profiles and are well-known for their health-enhancing effects, especially if consumed over a period of years or decades.
Skincare might also need an upgrade during your fifties. For example, you might want to add vitamin C or niacinamide to your routines.
Aging Gracefully In Your 60s
Finally, during your 60s, you’re looking for ways you can age gracefully.
For skin, you’ll want to focus on using SPF to reduce the risk of sunspots. These can grow quite quickly over time, leading to blemishes and uneven skin tone.
If you can switch your focus to a heart-healthy diet, that can work, too. With these, you’re looking to consume as many whole grains and lean proteins as you can, focusing on colorful foods where possible. These essentially keep the arteries clear and make it less likely that clots and plaques will form, which are a significant killer.
Lastly, you’ll want to explore how you can remain socially active into your older years. The more you can talk with friends and family, the more feel-good hormones you will experience coursing through your system.
