Turning 40 isn’t the end of your youth, nor does it mean you need to swap your stylish fits for cardigans and slippers and nights by the fire. But it does mean making some beneficial changes ot how you live to help you support your body, boost recovery, and deliver the quality of life you want and need. Because 40 these days isn’t old, and you definitely don’t want to be feeling or looking older than you should in your prime.
But the reality is that wellness in your 40s is massively different than in your 20s and 30s. This post is intended to mention a few key areas you need to prioritize moving forward for optimal health.
Heart Health
Cardiovascular disease is still one of the leading causes of death for men in the US, and while heart issues can strike at any age, the issue becomes more real as you get older. It doesn’t matter how much weight you bench press if your blood pressure is climbing. You need to have annual check-ups and keep your heart health a priority in all you do to ensure the risk of cardiovascular disease impacting your life is reduced.
Muscle and Bone Strength
After 40, your muscle mass declines by 1% per year. This can be a huge amount as your age progresses, and it can impact your quality of life. And when you add in a loss of bone density, the risk of more injuries doesn’t seem like an unrealistic scenario, doesn’t it? Strength training as you get older isn’t for vanity; it’s for health preservation and longevity, and just two sessions a week can make a big difference. Add in protein, vitamin D, and you’re covering all your bases here.
Hormone Health
Your 40s are when you start to notice the change in your hormones, specifically declining testosterone. You might notice lower energy levels, reduced muscle strength, mood changes, or dips in your libido. And while lifestyle factors can help they don’t always help enough.
If your testosterone is clinically low, then you might benefit from testosterone cream to restore hormone balance. It is delivered through the skin for a more targeted application and can support testosterone levels naturally, so you can get back on track.
Mental Health
The rates of suicide in men aren’t showing any signs of slowing down, and the days of men “toughing it out” or “putting a brave face on it” are over, as years of this messaging are resulting in damage and harm to mental health among the male population.
Sadly, rates of mental health issues, depression, and suicide are alarmingly high for middle-aged men. Now isn’t the time to brush off your mental health. Treat it as you would a broken bone and get help when you feel you need it. There is no shame in seeking treatment for mental health, and nothing to be gained from bottling things up. Whether you need therapy or simply to share your feelings with someone, do what you need to so you’re both physically and mentally in a good place as you get older.
