If the democrats want to secure their 2020 gains they’re going to need a new plan
This time Trump won’t be around to scare voters into voting blue. Democrats need to respond with policies that have changed American’s lives. Can they pass enough legislation in time?
2020 should have been a landslide for democrats and it wasn’t. It took the miracle that is Stacey Abrams to get a 50 seat (plus Kamala Harris) majority in the Senate and Democrats lost ground in the House. Not being Trump was enough to deliver Biden to the White House but in 2022 democrats won’t have Trump as a foil to win seats across the nation. Now is the time to double down on a policy that helps everyday working Americans and show that blue leadership is better than red leadership at the national level.
Pass legislation between now and then
Promoting legislation passed by the Biden administration between 2021 and the 2022 election will be the foundation of keeping the House and getting a real Senate majority. The Senate map is favorable for Democrats in 2022 but the House is more difficult. Democrats lost 9 House seats in 2020, an election where they won at the top of the ticket. 2020 should have been a landslide and it wasn’t. Democrats can’t depend on the popularity of Joe Biden is carry them through the mid-terms.
Democrats are off to a great start. The stimulus checks that went out in January/February definitely helped. Also, passing the child tax credit was helpful. It put money directly into the pockets of Americans. The current infrastructure/reconciliation bill needs to pass as well. It will provide a much-needed boost to jobs and the greater economy. It also will be an investment in the country that should have been made 20 years ago. Democrats need to press on the positive talking points of 2 years of democratic power. It will be important to focus on policy and not social issues to regain those seats in 2022 and expand the Senate Majority.
Stay away from toxic social issues
Much of the perception of the democratic party over the past few years has been on divisive social issues. This is not to say that the federal government doesn’t need to take action on racial equality, gender equality, LGBTQIA+ issues, and so on, but perceptions need to shift in a new direction. Republicans often use heated debates around social issues to make easy-to-swallow talking points against Democrats. This is obvious in the current fight around Critical Race Theory. This is a deeply divisive issue. The argument has no basis in the reality of what teachers are proposing to include in the new curriculum and it’s a toxic minefield politically. One of the habits the democratic party has gotten into in recent memory is fighting in social issue battles that will never have a clear winner. For the Democratic party to stay on top, they must shy away from these fights and dominate where they can: policy.
Focus on state assemblies
Most Americans don’t understand this about their government but precious little governing is done at the federal level. The Federal government doesn’t have that many powers (by design) and often the Federal government funds things for the states to actually accomplish. Much of the governing that affects people’s everyday lives happens at the state level. This is an area where the Democratic party has not made hardly any gains in the last decades. Due to a variety of factors, the GOP has maintained a stranglehold on power at the state level, even in states where voters tend to vote blue nationally. In 2022, many state legislature seats and a few governorships will be up for grabs and Democrats would do well to pour money into those state races.
It is always easier to get people excited about a national race (like the president for example) but it is much harder to get people excited for their state representative much less their city council races. However, more governing is done at that level than anywhere else. It’s time for Democrats to take local races as seriously as Republicans take these races. Americans are already seeing the results of the GOP getting to draw congressional districts for the second time since 2010. This will continue to disadvantage democrats long term.
If you want to see the other side of the coin, I posted about why the GOP can maintain power for a very long time over at CameronJournal.com.
Pandemic Management
This is where Joe Biden can help his party the most: the pandemic. As of this writing, the pandemic is raging throughout the nation. Even in vaccinated areas, cases are on the increase, and in areas where vaccination uptake has been slow, it has been worse. Masking is making a comeback in some areas and some are canceling their fall plans. Just as it appeared that life might begin returning to some semblance of normality, the Delta variant has upturned everything again. There are even rumors of lockdowns. Getting the pandemic management right at the federal level is something that Biden can deliver for the mid-terms. If the pandemic is noticeably better by next summer, that could pay big dividends come November. However, convincing hesitant Americans to get the vaccine is his biggest challenge. Lockdowns are unpopular and may not be effective. The pandemic might call for them but more lockdowns could spell doom for their electoral chances. Gavin Newsom is already facing a recall fight in California due to his pandemic policies. More recalls and a loss of seats could follow if that measure is taken.
Conclusions
Democrats need to lead with policy and not with social issues in 2022. This also means that they need to pass more meaningful legislation heading into the mid-terms. They need to send Congresspeople and Senators back to their states and districts with actionable talking points that aren’t just more platitudes. There’s going to be some harsh criticism of leadership around the pandemic. Showing that the Democrats have made life better for the everyday American will help them get a majority in the Senate and give them a chance to hang onto the house.
