If you are concerned that you’re making some mistakes with your investment then you are not alone. So many people are in the same position as you, but if you take action now, you’ll soon find that you can make a major change if you simply make sure that you are ignoring the below mistakes.

Ignoring Inflation

Many people assume that investing is riskier than holding cash and for this reason, they keep all of their money in a savings account. If the interest rate of your savings happens to be below inflation then the real value will erode over time. There are a lot of ways that you can help to mitigate this. One of the things you can do would be for you to take into account the current economy and then make decisions based on how that is doing. If you can do this then you will soon find that things end up working in your favor.

Forgetting Tax

Investing in a tax-efficient wrapper such as a personal pension could help to give you a huge boost to your finances. Income and gains made through investments will be tax-free. You may also find that you can withdraw them at any time. If you want to get the best result out of your income then make sure that you keep this in mind as it could end up working in your favor. If you need a bit of help with your investment then one thing you can do is hire a financial advisor. You may also find that you can go through Alumni Ventures, if you would like to take your business investment to that next level. Of course, there is help out there and if you can seek it out then this will work in your favor overall so be mindful of that.

Failing to Build a Fund

While investing does give your money the chance to grow, you do need to make sure that you put some money to one side so that you have things to cover during an emergency. As a general rule, it is wise for you to have around six months’ worth of expenditure in an easy-to-access account. If you can make sure that you have this then you are covered if your boiler breaks down or if you end up with your car needing a repair. If you can keep this in mind then you are bound to reap the benefits going forward.

Not Diversifying

You should never put all of your eggs in one basket. You need to focus on different asset classes if you can, whether that is shares, bonds or even cash. If you can spread your investment and you can take the time to look at things from a wider perspective then this will help you out a lot in the long run. At the end of the day, diversifying is key to your investment success so you have to keep this in mind if you can.

Focusing on the Short-Term

Another thing you need to avoid doing is focusing on the short term. At the end of the day, the stock market can be very volatile and share prices often move up and down from one second to the next. This is why you do have to try and approach share investing with a much broader long-term view. If you can do this then you will soon find that it is much easier for you to get the result you are going for.

Refusing a Loss

Sometimes, it can be tempting to accept the fact that you have made a loss. Holding onto an underperforming stock is one of the worst mistakes you can make. You may hope that the price is going to recover but this might never be the case. One way for you to gain some protection would be for you to accept the fact that you have made a loss and move on. Don’t hold onto things that do not benefit you any more because if you do then you may find that you end up falling behind and that you end up making a loss. Use your past experiences to guide your gut but remember, just because one stock recovered, doesn’t mean that the next one will. If you can keep this in mind then it will make you a better investor overall, so make sure that you keep that in mind. Of course,  if you need some help then you might also want to look to other investors to see what calls they are making.
