Your employees are the lifeforce of your company. They are the people who keep the business going, generate results, and keep the profits from coming in. And they should be treated with the respect and attention they deserve. Without a workforce of talented, devoted individuals, your organisation would fail dramatically.
But despite this obvious fact, there are so many employers out there who treat their staff like resources instead of human beings. They overload them with work, neglect their mental health, and treat them poorly. If you are one of these bosses, this way of working will lead to a whole of negative consequences including a high employee turnover, decreased productivity, and poor mental health.
Yet on the other hand, if your employees feel happy and rewarded at work, they will be more productive. Your employee retention will increase and your business will benefit from the hard work your devoted staff are putting in. So what can you do to create a happier workforce?
Promote a healthy work-life balance
You need to respect the fact that your staff have their own lives. Even if your business is super important to you, your employees won’t feel as strongly. They want to get home and spend time with their families, take care of their health, and enjoy some much-needed relaxation. Forcing them to spend excessive hours in the office will only make them stressed and resentful. Allow them to enjoy a healthier work-life balance by giving them more flexible work schedules. Consider adopting a hybrid work structure, whereby employees only come into the office a couple of days a week. This way they can spend less time and money commuting, have more family time, and enjoy the freedom to get their personal errands done more easily.
Change their environment
The environment in which your employees work can have a great impact on their mental health. If your office is dark and miserable, people will feel less happy and productive. Make an effort to jazz up your workspace and make it more lively. This might mean adding some plants, letting in more natural light, or hiring a commercial painting company to put a splash of color on the walls. Your employees will feel more relaxed and cheerful coming into an attractively decorated office.
Promote social interaction
Do your staff all get on well? Or are they merely colleagues who speak to others out of necessity? You want your workforce to be a cohesive team of people with a close relationship. If you don’t have this, productivity and collaboration will be negatively impacted. Schedule work social events such as nights out, team lunches, and weekend getaways. Your employees will benefit from richer social lives, and your business will benefit from more productive team members.
Listen
As a boss, it is your duty to help your staff with whatever issues they are dealing with. But for this to work, they need to know you can listen. Let them know that you are here to help, and try to solve any problems they may be having. You may not always be able to come up with a practical solution, but just knowing you care can make a big difference.
