Venezuela has had a variety of social problems since the fall of its socialist government and the rise of Maduro to replace Hugo Chavez. It’s prison system has been front and center in the rife of issues that have gone since then. Shortages abound, poverty has exploded, and society has somewhat collapsed. I was treated to an “on-the-ground” report about this a few years ago and the situation, for many, is quite dire. This second hand report came from a woman who had moved back to her home country. While she was able to afford food and other items many people do not and cannot.

Obviously, these conditions have reached the prison system and the present government has had to cede control of several prisons to the prisoners who have setup their own sorts of post-apocalyptic dictatorships. If we needed a clue as to what could happen to humanity during the climate crisis or during any sort of societal collapse, this is a view through the looking glass of that potential future.

In this video, we’re learning about these prison dictatorships and the power these people wield on their fellow in-mates. The most amazing part is the kind of ad-hoc society that has developed in the most unusual of circumstances.
