Got a camping expedition planned? Don’t forget these 10 handy tools. From flashlights to bottle openers, here are a few commonly overlooked items that can be very useful to have when camping.
Flashlight
While most modern phones have a flashlight feature, it’s worth bringing a purpose-built flashlight on your camping trip. Such flashlights are typically more powerful and will allow you to see better in the dark if you need to use the bathroom at night or search your tent for something. They can also save you from draining your phone’s battery.
Lighter
A lighter could be handy if you plan to have a campsite or a barbecue (it’s typically easier than using a box of matches). You could also consider bringing kindling and firelighters to help with firemaking. Just make sure that campfires are allowed at the campground you’re staying at.
Portable power pack
For charging up your electronic devices on the go, consider bringing a portable power pack. Some portable power packs can carry 6 full charges, which can be useful for a multi-day trip or if you’re bringing lots of devices.
Water bottle
Bringing a bottle of water will stop you from getting thirsty. You may also potentially need water for tasks like making coffee, boiling food or cleaning.
Knife
A knife could be handy to bring for a variety of tasks, ranging from food preparation to cutting ropes. Look for an everyday carry knife that you can use for a multitude of tasks. Swiss-army knives can also be useful to own – these knives may incorporate other tools featured on this list.
Mallet
When putting tent pegs in the ground, it’s often useful to have a mallet. While there are other tools you may be able to use as an improvised hammer, a purpose-built mallet will be easier to use and will prevent you from causing damage to other items.
Duct tape
If you need to make an emergency repair to your tent, a roll of duct tape could come in handy. You can also use duct tape to hold other tools in place (such as attaching a flashlight to the top of your tent).
First aid kit
A first aid kit is also important to bring in case you or someone else experiences an injury. There are camping first aid kits that you can buy that are compact and waterproof – these have all the medical supplies you need already in them, but you will need to remember to top them up if you use any supplies.
Can opener
Cans of food are great for taking on camping trips because they preserve food well. Just make sure that you bring a can opener, otherwise you’ll have trouble getting into any cans that don’t have a puller.
Bottle opener
Although not technically essential, a bottle opener is always useful to have if you decide to buy some bottled beers. There are bottle openers you can attach to your keyring, as well as Swiss Army knives that contain bottle openers.
