As an employer, it should be no surprise that protecting the health and safety of your team is one of your most important responsibilities. However, every workplace has so many potential risks that you have to prioritise which you focus on first. Addressing every threat is the eventual aim, but you want to start with those that are most likely to play a real factor in the workplace, so here are some to consider.

Slips, Trips, And Falls
By far the most common and preventable injuries in all workplaces, these simple accidents cause a huge amount of injuries every year. Understand the various risks in your workplace, such as uneven surfaces, poor lighting, loose cables, or cluttered walkways. Then, put the right measures in place to mitigate those risks, whether it’s enforcing housekeeping rules for all the staff, improving the lighting in dim areas, or using the appropriate signage for steps and wet surfaces.
Machinery And Equipment Accidents
For any workplaces that use machinery or heavy equipment, such as manufacturing and construction, accidents pose a severe risk. This is often due to inadequate training with the machines used, a lack of safety guards and personal protective equipment, or poor maintenance of the equipment itself. Investing in the care that the equipment needs not only improves safety but also productivity, as well. Otherwise, take the time to train and properly equip any operators.
Electrical Hazards
While often overlooked, electrical hazards have some of the most potentially devastating and costly consequences. This can be down to exposed wiring, overloaded circuits, or improper use of electrical equipment. The shocks, burns, and electrocution that happen as a result of electrical hazards can pose a legitimately fatal danger, so regular electrical inspections and proper maintenance of all electrical equipment are essential. Workers should never be expected to keep working around electrical faults.
Fire Hazards
Every workplace is at some degree of risk of a fire. Flammable material, electrical equipment, and other contributing threats are everywhere, and fire risk assessments can help you find out where the potential threat comes from, as well as what you can do about this. This can include training your team with fire drills, ensuring that fire safety equipment is placed sensibly throughout the workplace, and taking steps to address risk factors, like flammable materials, blocked exits, or malfunctioning alarms.
Poor Ergonomics
Although the risk it poses might not be quite as dramatic as the others mentioned above, the damage caused by poor ergonomics can be far-reaching, indeed. Poor desk setups, unsupportive chairs and repetitive movements can lead to chronic pain and long-term injuries. These can develop very gradually, making them easy to miss until the damage is done. Making the workplace more ergonomic with adjustable chairs, regular breaks, and equipment to help move heavy items can prevent a lot of harm in the long run.
A thorough risk assessment is going to help you find where the real risks in your workplace lie, and what you can do about them. Getting that process underway is what matters most.
