In this post, we are going to discuss the ins and outs of achieving this kind of career, including some ideas about how best to approach it and what you can do to ensure that you achieve it as well as possible. Let’s take a look and see what to think about here.

Overcome The Mental Block

The first thing that most people need to do when they want to forge a writing career is to overcome the mental block that they may well have around it. You might be thinking that it’s surely not possible to have this kind of career, or that there will be a lot of difficulty around it that you’ll have to get through first. While there are certainly going to be challenges, as there are with any career, it’s the kind of thing that you should certainly remember is perfectly possible to do, so that is something to consider.

To overcome the mental block, it’s all about taking a look at some role models of people who have done it before, and seeing that it is possible. And remembering that these days there are more opportunities than ever to turn writing into a career, so you should certainly believe that it is possible to achieve. If you can believe that, it’s going to be in a much better place on the whole that you begin the journey.

Understand The Place Of AI

Most people who are getting into writing as a career today will find themselves wondering and worrying over the apparent threat of AI. However, a proper appraisal of AI is certainly worth looking into, because you might be surprised to discover just how much of a threat it is – which is to say, not very much of one at all. In fact, you will find that a lot of clients are purposefully moving against AI and asking for human writers specifically. So you should try not to worry too much about the threat of AI. If you can just stick to your guns and put yourself out there, you should find that you can find work, no matter what ends up happening with AI. Although it might mean that you need to improve your writing skills, which is only ever a good thing anyway. These can span a wide range of areas, and you can even dive into Scriberly career resources to help find AI and AI-adjacent resources to help with your writing career.

Pick Your Niche

One thing you will have to do, however, is to make sure that you pick a niche you are happy with. It should be something that genuinely interests you, which you feel you can write about easily and fluently, and which is also going to be lucrative enough to build a career out of. This is something that can be hard to pin down, so it might take you a while to get that right. However, on the whole it’s the kind of thing that you should find surprisingly simple as long as you put the effort and dedication into it.

Your niche, whatever it is, should excite you. That is the main criterion here, and if you don’t have that it’s really not worth it at all. So make sure that you are picking something that you think you can write about day after day. And bear in mind that there might be times you have to widen out a little and go broad, so that you can actually expect to make some money in the meantime. There is no shame in that, and it’s something that writers often have to do in order to make ends meet.

Build A Portfolio

No matter what kind of writing you do, you then need to build a portfolio around your chosen niche. The main mistake people make here is not having a broad enough portfolio, or not putting enough effort into the individual pieces within it. You have to be able to show your skill and talent, and that means that you are going to need a way to do it. Make sure that you show a variation of pieces within your niche, if possible. That will give you the best chance for success, and it will also provide you with the practice you will find necessary here as well. All in all, it’s something that you need to get right.

Consider Your Options

In any case, you are always going to have a lot of options for how to make money writing, and it might actually be a simpler thing than you think to get right. Most of all, you should make sure that you are aware of the options available, because there really are plenty out there. You might want to look into some blogging opportunities, for instance – a great way to find consistent daily work that can pay quite well. Or you might consider copywriting or content writing, or even a combination of all of these. However you do it, it’s good to know you do have options.

Persist

Finally, remember that it will likely take a lot of persistence to achieve what you are hoping to achieve with your writing career. This is true of almost everyone, and it’s just one of those things that you need to be aware of as best as you can be. As long as you are happy to stick with it, however, that is going to mean that you end up in a much better place and that you can probably find success easily enough.
