Running a tattoo shop can be a very lucrative business. However, to maintain a professional and hygienic environment, it is essential to follow some basic safety guidelines. When I worked/owned a tattoo shop, we actually got shut down for not quite complying with all the proper regulations. So learn from my past mistakes! This blog post will discuss the top five tips for maintaining hygiene in your tattoo shop.
1) Maintain a clean area:
This may seem like a no-brainer, but keeping your tattoo area clean is important. This means wiping down surfaces, washing bedding and towels regularly, and using a disinfectant solution on all equipment. Make sure that artists are washing their hands regularly and hand washing areas are available.
It is also important to have a separate area for prepping tattoos. Again, this area should be kept clean and free of any potential contaminants.
A well-maintained shop will instill confidence in potential clients and help you maintain a good reputation.
2) Use disposable gloves:
One of the most important things you can do to maintain hygiene in your tattoo shop is to use disposable gloves. Gloves protect you from coming into contact with blood and other body fluids. They also protect your clients from any potential contaminants on your hands.
It is essential to change gloves regularly and to wash your hands thoroughly after each tattoo session. Make sure each station has at least two boxes gloves.
If you are not using disposable gloves, make sure that you are washing your hands frequently and taking other precautions, such as wearing latex gloves or using hand sanitizer.
3) Use new and clean needles:
Another crucial element of tattoo shop hygiene is the use of new and clean needles. Needles should be sterilized with needle cleaner before each use and disposed of properly after each tattoo.
Using new needles for each tattoo helps prevent the spread of infection and ensures that your clients get the best possible care.
Reusable needles should be stored in a clean and dry environment when not in use. Never reuse a needle that has already been used on someone else. Doing so puts both you and your client at risk for infection.
4) Use disposable ink cups:
Ink cups are another important part of the tattooing process. Ink cups should be made of a disposable material, such as paper or plastic. Do not reuse ink cups, as this can lead to cross-contamination. After each use, dispose of the ink cup in a proper sharps container.
Wash your hands thoroughly after each tattoo session and before you prepare the next client’s ink cup.
5) Follow proper aftercare procedures:
After a tattoo is completed, it is essential to follow proper aftercare procedures. This includes washing the tattoo with soap and water, applying an antibiotic ointment, and covering the tattoo with a bandage.
It is also important to advise your clients on caring for their tattoos properly. For example, advise them to avoid sunlight, swimming, and other activities that could irritate the tattoo.
These simple tips will help you maintain a clean and professional environment in your tattoo shop. Taking these precautions can help prevent the spread of infection and ensure that your clients are getting the best possible care.
