Over the summer, the iconic cathedral suffered a construction fire that destroyed the roof, the historic spire, and nearly collapsed the entire structure. The world watched in horror as the fire seemed to burn on into the night. Trump even tweeted that Parisian firefighters should drop water on the building from a tanker causing them to issue a english tweet repudiating the idea. It was a long day but the fire was finally put out and the structure, tenuously, remained standing. Since then, the place has been shut as the evaluation and repairs began. Donations poured in from around the world to save the world heritage site. President Macron committed to completing the restoration in 5 years. However, even though it is early days in the restoration of the cathedral, there are already problems. Money is already in short supply and the work is going to take at least a decade if not longer. The structure is barely standing as of now and the damage is still being evaluated. Sculptures, art, and other works damaged in the fire are sitting in a warehouse awaiting the restoration of their own. The situation seems to be dire, will Notre Dame ever open to the public again?
