I’m happy to report that my new book, Cast Iron is out now. It’s available through Amazon and right here at The Widgery Reading Boutique! This project has been a long time in the making and I thought I would give everyone a peek behind the scenes of how this book finally came together.
The Journey
12 years ago, I heard a story when I was 19 years old and based on that story I went home and wrote down some thoughts, ideas, and about 50 pages of what is now my debut novel. This is a project that has been dear to my heart for some time. As long-time readers know, I started writing seriously in 2014 after taking several years off to run 2 magazines, complete 2 degrees, and create Denver Fashion Week. I’m excited to finally release this project. I’ve had a chance to pitch this project to major agencies and get feedback on them and ride the high of getting considered. However, lucky for the reader and myself, I decided to publish this project in-house.
Judge A Book By Its Cover
Creating the cover was an interesting journey. I borrowed the pan from a neighbor of mine and a drafted another neighbor to lend his hands and arms to the cover. The pan was not in great shape and I had to restore it back to cooking condition just for this photo! I created the photo and cover myself. It is exciting to have the equipment and expertise necessary to take the idea I had in my head for years and turn it into reality.
About Cast Iron
Cast Iron is about Randy Carruth, a 15-year-old boy who is starting a new life with his step=dad, his mother and sister in Missouri. However, he soon finds out that his new bucolic but structured life is nothing like it seems. Randy is faced with a terrible dilemma, how can he save his sister when it seems like the adults in his life won’t take any action? When Randy takes matters into his own hands, the consequences change his life forever. Randy ends up in prison where he spends 3 years and then, once turned out into the world must find his way. He travels to California and then back to Missouri where he falls in with a group of young men with no families, nowhere to go, and little to live for. Randy explores the world of sex, drugs, and partying before returning to prison. After a brief lock-up, Randy is reunited with this mother where his heart is broken again but he finds something he never expected: forgiveness.
Cast Iron is a modern journey of one young man finding his way in a world that doesn’t always make sense, is filled with paradoxes, and where even his own feelings can be confusing.
