I’ve spent quite a bit of time studying the unique sub culture that is MGTOW (men going their own way). These men have rejected marriage and dating women in favor of permanent bachelorhood. And in 2022, they are still going strong, but in a different way than before.

The Reddit Ban

In the first place, it was difficult to really dig into the current state of MGTOW because all the subreddits have been banned. There was actually a subreddit of people dedicated to getting the sub banned and they were successful. Reddit has been trying to clean up its more seedy bits and there are various subs that have begun to disappear. The “manosphere” has been victim number one due to the rampant misogyny that tends to congregate in those hallowed halls. Much of the discussion has moved over to independent online locations, but the discussion is not as robust as it was on reddit. I think many of the more casual users decided not to make the switch over. However, communities where guys are talking about dating and exploring bachelorhood still exist and can be found online.

Youtube and TikTok

I think it’s interesting how many of the concepts that I’ve watched be fringe ideas in MGTOW and other circles have gotten more mainstream. There are whole YouTube channels devoted to talking about the differences in modern society between men and women. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of TikTok channels of guys telling other guys how to “stay toxic” and “reject dating” or how to act around women so that men don’t get taken for a ride. The phrase, “hold your frame” is now reaching popular parlance. That is certainly a change in 2022. More and more podcasts and other media are talking about dating, men and women in the parlance of MGTOW and other men’s rights advocates. I think that is an fascinating development. There is a real potential that MGTOW could go mainstream. It could also indicate that men are fed up with the current dating culture. It will be interesting to see how that develops over time.

Social problems

The social complaints that have come out of the “manosphere” and are most often cited by MGTOW proponents have yet to reach popular consciousness. Well, let me be specific, the problems are now more well-known but the discussion about how to solve them is completely stalled. No one really wants to deal with the issues of male loneliness, the family court system, or the financial costs of dating and marriage. If anything, it has become popular to make fun of these guys.

Indeed, guys say plenty of cringe-worthy things about women that just make me shake my head. I follow a Twitter account that posts this kind of thing, and I’m gobsmacked by how bad some of these guys are in their attitudes toward women. There are some men who seriously need to re-evaluate their attitudes toward women. Thinking about women as anything other than people simply will not do.

Straight Men are definitely in between a rock and a hard spot when it comes to dating. I’m not quite sure what the solution to that is exactly. For MGTOW men, it is not longer an issue as they have fled the dating scene. Meanwhile, elsewhere, the pickup artist grift continues and guys keep thinking that muscles and money will get them women.

MGTOW in 2022

I would describe the situation of this interesting little sub-culture as unbowed and unbroken. It likely isn’t as popular as the online posting would have you believe. However, the fact that it is spreading across social media and into creator channels and reaching some kind of mainstream appeal is interesting. The Reddit ban might make people feel good for a while but all it does is send it further underground. As I’ve said before, de-platforming does very little good in most cases. In either case, it appears that the problems with women and dating that MGTOW men have mentioned are making an impact in the culture. We can have a conversation about that being a good thing or a bad thing, but it looks they are here to stay. They are having an impact and that is worthy of notice by reasonable people.
