In celebration of International Women’s day, many brands used some clever “outrage” advertising strategies to get people’s attention to the good work that was happening in raising up the careers and the plight of women. The most controversial of these was Burger King who began their ad/tweet with “Women Belong in the Kitchen” to highlight their program to help women enter the culinary arts. This caused a Twitter storm that included me. When I tried to help someone from falling into their trap, I was told that I was rude and needed to apologize for mansplaining. I merely said, “read the whole tweet” so that they would not waste their energy on something that wasn’t deserving of their time. We parted ways. It was a microcosm of the larger problem. The intention has no matter these days. It was hard for me because I had been in the social media trenches with this person. We had defended each other in many a troll battle. In this Bill Maher video, the discussion around this is very informative and speaks to the problem with our modern culture.
