Losing your job can sometimes come as a shock. You don’t always know what to do next, especially if you’re in a dying industry being eaten alive by new technology.

Fortunately, new opportunities are opening up all the time, and some of these can be exceptionally lucrative. Often, you can make more money than you think with simple strategies by joining the creator economy and selling what you know.

So, what should you do if you find yourself in this position?

Identify Your Unique Skills And Passions

The first step is to think about your unique skills and passions. What is it that you want to achieve?

The list of possibilities here is endless. You could do something related to your old work, or you could explore ways to turn your hobby into something you do full-time.

If you can, use the skills from your previous work and existing knowledge. This path will give you a bit of a head start and allow you to do things more seamlessly (instead of having to learn everything from scratch).

Choose A Niche

Next, you’ll want to “niche down” and choose something where you can speak to your target market. Remember, you don’t need to be a megastar with millions of followers to make an exceptional income.

If you have a general area you want to create inside, use tools like Google Trends to find specific sub-niches within that concept to find what might resonate with audiences. For example, if you lost your job as a teacher, you could set up a channel educating homeschooling parents.

Pick The Right Platform

The next step is to get your choice of platform right. You want to ensure you’re meeting your audience where they are.

We won’t go through the big names here because you probably know them all already. However, it is also worth peering behind the scenes to explore who you will use for follow-on monetisation.

For example, a lot of creators use services like Fanfix to gather payments from subscriptions. Leaning into systems that are already in place is usually a better idea than trying to create your own.

Add Your Content

The next step is obviously to add your content. You want to set it up so that you’re offering more value to your audience than anyone else in your niche, focusing on the people you can help the most.

People say that you should post regularly, which is true. However, you should also post things that are really going to make a difference when it comes to sales. Don’t focus on the general social media user-base, but focus instead on the people you want to sell to.

Stay Resilient

Finally, you want to ensure that you stay resilient and keep on the course. Persistence in the name of the game when it comes to starting a creator economy job. You won’t usually have big breakthroughs unless you stick at it and wait until someone finds your content useful, and then use them as your word-of-mouth marketing.
