In an age of information that we live in, libraries might seem old hat. Why on earth do we need to store books in buildings if we can Google any information that we might need or simply read on our devices or order a book from Amazon? As it turns out, libraries are an important part of society. There are a few reasons for this:
- Libraries are free to the user
- They have help community information
- They offer meeting rooms for the community at low cost/free
- They offer a 3rd space to hang out
- They are helpful to children and young people
Libraries have become not just repositories for books and newspapers but they have become full fledge community centers offering movies, tv shows, books, and even games to check out. For those who speak other languages, many books published in those languages are not available in stores and libraries will often offer books and video options in those languages.
I have great memories of going to the library as a kid. I read magazines I couldn’t afford to subscribe to and as an adult, I checked out DVDs and more from libraries so I could watch things that were hard to find online or simply impossible to find.
Libraries have filled and important niche in local communities. For those looking for social services, the local library has become a center for pointing people in those directions. For the homeless and busy moms, libraries offer a safe place to be during the day and a place for kids to hang out after school that keeps them out of trouble. Libraries are very important and they do things that Amazon and Google can’t begin to digitize. They provide community and their role is more important than ever before.
If you’re not in the mood to head over to the library and you’re looking for some good reading. You
