Politics in business has a major effect on how a company is run. Sometimes, it’s for the better, and other times, it’s for the worse. In most cases, an organization is beholden to the compliance laws inflicted upon it, and success comes from how you handle matters. So, what are some things to look out for? From tariffs to forced DEI, here are some of the most common.
Health and Safety Regulations
Of course, health and safety is a necessity and is there for the protection of individuals, businesses and the wider environment. However, there can sometimes be a conflict between operational needs and the compliance required. Of course, high quality safety mechanisms are needed for many parts of commercial and industrial business. For instance, a Kunkle valve of the highest quality will help your company stay compliant with pressure and liquid release.
Policies and Tariffs in Trade
Free trade is something of an oxymoron! As you will be well aware, trade isn’t free. There are tariffs on imports and exports, some of which are exorbitant depending on the countries involved. But what are the reasons? The official reasons given are to protect domestic industries by making foreign products more expensive. But more often than not, political games are played out in the trade industry. Ask yourself, do imports from China really need to be so costly?
Corruption and Politics in Business
There isn’t a sector or level of societal infrastructure untouched by corruption in developed countries. The mixing of business and political leaders through systems such as lobbying creates the perfect storm. Today, 60% of US adults believe the current economic system favors the corporation over the people. This is also an unfortunate part of doing business in an open democratic economy, where there are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of the system.
Discrimination Laws and Diversity Hiring
Everyone should be given the same opportunities for a role based on merit and the likelihood of being a good fit for the company. However, certain ideologies have infiltrated many workplaces today, that could be described as DEI extremism. Instead of hiring based on the skills and competencies of a candidate, many organizations today hire to fill a government mandated quota. This breeds toxicity such as harmful positivity and unfair and improper recruitment.
Good Old Bureaucratic Red Tape
Bureaucracy is nothing new, and many business leaders understand that red tape will always be an issue. This is one reason why the lobbyist movement is so popular. As a business leader, you will have to buy (for lack of a better word) your way into the good graces of powerful people. Of course, it doesn’t always come down to quasi-corruption. Sometimes, red tape is a necessary control mechanism as a company is assessed for its suitability for certain licenses.
Summary
Health and safety laws are a good yet simplified example of how politics in business can affect a company. Of course, almost no organization is insulated from internal and external corruption, as history has shown. Then there’s good old red tape, something every venture has to deal with.
