Lifelong care costs can arise as a result of medical negligence, which can be among the most damaging for anyone. Depending on the situation and complexity of the case, there may also be little you can do about it. However, the effects are very real, and many people all over the world have to deal with some of the costs, from long-term rehab to managing chronic conditions.

Disability from Birth Injuries

All too often, a serious issue arises from the moment a baby is born. It is believed that around 20,000 babies are affected each year from medical negligence during labor, and that’s not including damage done to mothers. This could be a reason why birth injury claims are on the rise in countries like the UK and the US. Malpractice, such as wrong forceps use and oxygen deprivation, can cause issues like cerebral palsy that require lifelong treatment and therapy.

Long-Term Rehab and Therapy

It is hard to believe that there are bad doctors who would unintentionally hurt patients because they are not competent. It’seven harder to believe there are surgeons who do it intentionally. Unfortunately, both are true, and many lives have been ruined through something like spinal and even brain damage through medical malpractice. These are severely traumatising physically and mentally, and often require large rehabilitation and therapy costs to manage properly.

Lifelong Care Costs from Home Adaptations

Around 1 million (7%) of Americans over the age of 65 used wheel-based mobility devices such as wheelchairs and scooters. This is expected as you age, but medical negligence can cause early and permanent impairment to the point that you are confined to a wheelchair. You can do everything you can to take control of your health, but malpractice can cause so much suffering that you are exposed to massive costs as you adapt your home for ongoing mobility needs.

Chronic Condition Management

Sometimes, and through nobody’s fault, there can be a misdiagnosis. Then there are doctors who are just bad at their jobs and miss seemingly obvious signs of a specific illness. When some symptoms are misdiagnosed, it gets worse to the point where you have it for life and must manage it forever. This means you could incur costs for treatment, medication, and therapy; costs that would have been avoided if your physician had actually done their job correctly.

Potential Loss of Future Earnings

One of the biggest causes of stress in people with ongoing medical issues is the loss of earnings. When there has been clinical negligence, it can cause problems so severe that you are unable to return to work, meaning you lose out on future earnings to support your family. This is made worse by the loss of your workplace pension and the ability to save. But you need money for healthcare treatment. As such, it can trigger a hopeless cycle of despair and stress.

Summary

A disability from a birth injury is a perfect example of how medical negligence can cause lifelong care costs that you must meet. You may also have to adapt your home after being injured by a doctor, and the issue can be so bad that you are unable to return to work, losing future money.
