With Americans’ debt around $17.7 trillion, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on the Cities Paying Off the Most Household Debt, based on recently released data from the Federal Reserve.
Debt service has exploded over the past 40 years and most American’s carry a balance on credit cards to fund all sorts of things. A sign that people are paying down debt is good because it shows there is good, healthy finances in many households in that area. Despite the cost of living, California cities rank high in this study while other cities rank lower. This could be due to lower wages being adversely effected by inflation (but that is not a solid conclusion).

| 1. Santa Clarita, CA | 173. Akron, OH | |
| 2. Fremont, CA | 174. Milwaukee, WI | |

| 4. Chula Vista, CA | 176. Buffalo, NY | |

“A large decrease in the average resident’s debt in a city is a great sign – it shows that people are not only keeping up with their payments but also cutting back on borrowing. When it comes to Santa Clarita, Fremont and San Jose, CA, the three cities with the largest decreases, residents are fairly wealthy and responsible with credit, so their large debt decreases aren’t too surprising.”

“Santa Clarita residents paid off the most household debt in the first quarter of 2024, with the average dropping by $3,687. This brought the average household debt in Santa Clarita to roughly $445,000, which is also the highest total of any city.”
