You want to go into business selling your widgets do you?

Starting a business can be a wonderful, exhilarating experience and it can also be the most painful, terrible, awful, god-I-wish-had-my-job-and-a-beer, decision you will ever make in your entire life. You really have to figure out if starting a business is for you and if you’re ready for the commitment that is required to start a business. It’s worse than having a child. Children at least try to stay alive. Business‘ natural tendency is towards failure unless you put the right things in place to ensure success. I’ve started a closed a couple businesses in my life and so I have unique experience in getting things off the ground. Don’t believe those online charlatans that act like going into the business is plug and play. It isn’t. I don’t care if you’re selling the cure for Cancer, AIDS, and a peace plan for the Middle East, you still have to have things in place for success. If you are intent on starting your own business concern, then consider the following list.

Cameron’s Advice on How to Start A Business

Encourage Collaboration

There are loads of great elements that you need to consider when running a business and trying to make it more successful, and it is important to make sure you make the most of this. One of the best things you can do to improve this process is to encourage collaboration; this is vital for greater success and prolonged efficiency, and this is so important. You have to make sure you do the best you can to encourage collaboration within the company, and one of the best ways of being able to achieve this is via cross functional communication as one of the core pillars of being more successful. This is something that you need to keep in mind when you are looking to improve this, and there are loads of great ways of being able to collaborate more. Whether it’s collaboration between different departments of the business, or you are joining forces with another business entirely, this is something that you need to focus on as much as you can moving forward.

Educate Yourself

It’s important to get some solid business reading under your belt. I’m not saying that you need to take on hardcore accounting but some general things to read are a good idea. I would start with anything by Donny Deutsche. He is an interesting fellow because he grew up in the world of business and advertising with his Father and took his Father’s modest ad agency into the big time and learned many hard lessons along the way. It would also be good to read Rich Dad/Poor Dad and learn about your own attitudes towards money and success. Fixing your thinking now will help you avoid many mistakes.

Research

Now comes the important part. Once you know what service you plan on providing or what product you would like to sell and then find out a few things. Who is in the marketing already? How big are they? Can you compete? Then you have to work out the logistics of things including how you are going to acquire/make your product or provide your service. Test things out, always get samples, find out what you have to learn or what professional you might need to hire. Trial and Error is going to be the order of the day. You can try to avoid some of this process but you won’t really understand what you’re doing until you really sit down and do it. This is also a good time to think about marketing and customer acquisition. If you are providing a service it is important to understand if you are simply offering services as a professional or if you are actually starting a business with growth potential. Many business are simply jobs that people own. It is neither good or bad but it is important to know the difference.

Who is your customer?

Bouncing off that idea of customer acquisition, the worst mistake you can make when starting a business is to say that your product is for “everyone.” No product starts out being for everyone at first. Products start out with a core audience that will serve as early adopters of the product. For example, early adopters of The Cameron Cowan Show are those already interested in politics and current events. If I tried to take this show to an audience only interested in entertainment news I would be hitting my head against a very large wall. You have to figure out how your customer is and then expand into different markets later.

Why Quality Content is Important for Marketing Purposes

Creating quality content is essential for marketing purposes because it can help you attract and retain customers. Quality content is informative, relevant, and engaging, which means that people are more likely to read it and share it with others. Additionally, high-quality content can help you build a robust online presence and improve your search engine ranking. By creating quality content or using a reliable article writing service like this one, you can improve your marketing results while also positioning yourself as an expert in your field.

Incorporate

Having your legal house in order is always wise. Knowing potential taxes, licenses, fees and other things is vital during the research phase is always a good decision. Incorporation is crucial for tax and liability purposes. This might be a good chance to head over to Legalzoom or to consult with a lawyer about the particulars involved with your specific business. Skipping this step has real financial consequences so don’t say that I didn’t warn you!

Have a Plan

Developing a business plan and understanding what you are planning on doing is crucial for the long term success of any business, even a professional business. The business plan book from the Rich Dad, Poor Dad series is vital reading in this area. I read about 10 business plan books before I really understood how to write a business plan and what it entailed. I recommend you scoot over to Amazon and avail yourself of that resource. You can literally hold it in one hand and write a business plan in the other.

Obviously, there is lots of business advice out there. I’m just giving you a few anecdotes about things I’ve found helpful. If you’re getting ready to go down this path, I wish you very good luck and I look forward to seeing your product or service everywhere.
