Industry 4.0 smart factories are becoming more popular as many manufacturers see the benefits. Even so, there is a slow adoption, despite the advantages. Today, you might ask if they are really the future? From cost savings to sustainability, there are many compelling reasons.
Overall Efficiency and Increased Productivity
There is sufficient evidence to suggest that smart factories have a very real impact on manufacturing efforts. For instance, it has been demonstrated that an Industry 4.0 system can reduce downtime by between 30% and 50%. Imagine systems that work to complete integrated tasks at every step of a process, such as a water filling line that requires minimal maintenance because the AI systems predict when an issue will arise, and you can act quickly to prevent it.
Direct Savings Can be Made
Many aspects of manufacturing contribute to costs. Employees, downtime and maintenance are just a few examples. With automated systems that include sensor technology, central control systems such as HMIs and even artificial intelligence, many of the associated costs of manufacture can indeed be reduced. All systems working together aim to enhance efficiencies and help any manufacturing strategy become more efficient, even improving quality control.
AI and Industry 4.0 Smart Factories
According to the National Association of Manufacturers, 49% of respondents to a survey claimed to have plans in place for partial or full automation, and 40% claimed that AI would play a significant role. When streamlining operations with automation, the role of AI can’t be ignored:
- When using AI, businesses can expect a 6% to 10% revenue increase.
- The global market size for AI in manufacturing is expected to reach $68 billion by 2032.
- Automated tasks completed by AI can free up to 70% of a worker’s time.
AI is beginning to be included in manufacturing and consumer-end products. In manufacturing, AI analyzes real-time data to spot performance patterns and optimize manufacturing processes.
Meeting Environmental Goals
Most manufacturers look to minimize waste, even if it is to save money. However, reduced waste also helps you reach environmental targets as part of ESG scoring and meet public-facing commitments as part of a mission statement. With a smart factory, you can contribute to more sustainable manufacturing practices that help with environmental goals because streamlined systems also reduce power used and help optimize resource usage.
Beating the Competition
A recent survey in the UK found that 50% of manufacturers have no plans for Industry 4.0 systems. That means, in Britain at least, every other competitor doesn’t have a plan for smart manufacture. However, when you adopt a smart manufacturing strategy, you immediately have a competitive advantage because you can potentially produce higher quality products at a lower cost. Additionally, smart systems can be quickly configured to respond to market changes.
Summary
Efficiency and productivity alone can make the case for Industry 4.0 smart factories. However, you can also reap the enormous benefits that AI has to offer in manufacturing. This includes faster and more adaptable systems that provide a competitive advantage in almost any sector.
