Small businesses are a cornerstone of the economy and can have excellent growth potential. In fact, the Small Business Administration reports that 99 percent of all businesses in the U.S. are small businesses. You can build a successful small business with a significant impact in many ways—but it takes some savvy strategy and planning to do so effectively.

There are several challenges that small businesses face when trying to grow their company with a significant impact, such as limited resources and visibility, lack of funding, and competition from much larger companies. However, there are also some advantages to being small, including lower overhead costs and easier access to partnerships and networking opportunities. By taking advantage of both sets of challenges and opportunities and focusing on what makes your business stand out from the competition, you can build a strong foundation for growing your company with a significant impact.

Start With Your Audience

The first step to building a company with a big impact is getting clear on your target audience. If you’re just getting started, you may not yet have this information and may still be in the process of identifying it. If that’s the case, begin with some basic questions to help you get a better picture of your ideal customer: What problems do they currently face? What would make their lives better? What are their values, personality, and general interests?

Once you have a more concrete idea of your target audience, it will be easier to build a business that resonates with them and meets their needs. This will also help you identify where your brand might be able to make a big impact.

Build Something People Want

Before you get too far into building and growing your business, take some time to get customer feedback on your product or service and how much it costs to ensure you’re not misdirecting your efforts. If your product or service doesn’t solve a problem customers are facing, or if it’s too expensive, they won’t buy it. And if you can’t get your product or service in customers’ hands, it doesn’t matter how much it will impact the world—you won’t be able to get the word out about it. Even if you’re starting, you can get feedback by talking to potential customers about what you’re hoping to do or sell. You can find these people in your network or online and tailor your message to their needs and concerns.

Focus on Core Competencies

What does your company do best to contribute to its core mission? What skillsets and expertise of your employees do you leverage to solve customers’ problems? While it can be tempting to stretch your company’s focus to include many different things, staying focused on your core competencies and what you do best is essential. This will help you become more efficient and effective while ensuring that your actions genuinely add value to your customers.

It can also help you identify the best opportunities to scale your impact and help more people in a way that leverages your core strengths. This can include partnering with other companies that are strong in specific areas that you’re not so that you can provide a more robust solution for your customers.

Leverage Technology

By leveraging technology, you can potentially reach more customers and provide solutions at a lower cost. You can also use technology to increase employee productivity and collaboration, decreasing turnover and increasing overall productivity. For example, you can use AI and chatbots to answer simple customer questions or help automate specific processes, such as scheduling. You can use digital tools like video marketing within your premises from /loop.tv/ to engage customers and social media to reach more people, whether delivering your core messaging or getting more customers in the door.
