During the summer your car may experience some special challenges. It’s up to you to make sure that these challenges don’t cause you problems with your vehicle.
The best way to do this is to ensure your vehicle is summer ready. Here’s how to do that.
1. Get Your Vehicle Ready for the Heat
As the temperatures rise, your car needs a little bit of extra help to perform its best. Summer heat can put a strain on your vehicle, making proactive maintenance extremely essential.
Start by checking your coolant and your radiator as well. Overheating is one of the top causes of summer overheating, and it’s usually preventable if you do routine care.
Be sure to inspect your belts as well as your hoses for signs of cracking, fraying, or even soft spots. The heat can wear and tear on these critical components of your vehicle. Replacing worn out parts now is far easier and cheaper than having to deal with an engine failure later on.
2. Check Tire Health and Pressure
Your tires are going to be in contact with hot pavement. This is why it is so vital to make sure they are ready for the job.
Heat expands air, so the pressure tends to increase during the warmer summer months. Over inflated or under inflated tires can lead to low fuel efficiency or dangerous blowouts.
You should use a reliable gauge to check the pressure in them regularly, especially before long trips. Also, inspect the tires for uneven wear, bulges, as well as low tread. If you notice any issues, then it may be time to rotate, balance, or simply replace them.
3. Take Care of Your Car’s Exterior
Summer sun can cause the paint on your vehicle to fade. It can also dry out rubber seals as well. To keep your car looking and functioning in the best shape possible,
Make sure you wash it regularly and apply a coat of wax to ensure that you are protecting the finish. Parking in shade or using a sunshade can also help to reduce UV damage.
If your vehicle has any dents, dings, or even cosmetic damage from the winter consider visiting a bodyshop so you can get quick and professional repairs. Fixing these very early will prevent rust and significantly increase the car’s resale value.
4. Test and Recharge the Air Conditioning System
There’s nothing worse than driving in heat during a scorching hot summer because you are living with a failing air conditioner. Before summer hits its full swing, you should test out your A/C to make sure that it is cooling effectively.
If it is just blowing warm air or making strange noises, it probably needs recharging or servicing.
Clean out the air filter as well because a clogged filter will reduce efficiency and this will put extra strain on your air conditioning unit.
As summer gets into high gear you want to make sure that your car is in great shape. You don’t want any surprises, so it’s best to do your inspection and repairs early.
