Going on a road trip for the first time is super exciting. You’re going to be packing your vehicle for long haul road travel, making sure it’s comfortable and cosy, and there’s nothing quite as buzzing as planning the itinerary. You really can go anywhere you like (as long as you’ve got the time to!), and that can be very liberating.
But if this is your first time going on a road trip, you’re going to want to keep a few essential tips in mind for the route ahead. After all, road travel is far less catered to than taking a flight or booking a cruise – you’re the only one who can bring the snacks round the car during the trip!
As such, here are three tips you need to keep in mind if you’ve never been on a road trip before.
Service Your Vehicle Before You Go
You don’t want to go on a road trip without the assurance of a mechanic. As such, get your vehicle serviced before you head off. Make sure it’s in good condition and that your chance of a ‘freak’ breakdown is very low. A mobile rv repair service might be helpful to book in before go.
You’ll also want to take some spare car maintenance items along with you, such as a tyre, a car jack, a wrench, and a flashlight.
Taking an RV? Stay at Campgrounds
If you’re traveling in an RV on your very first road trip – and that’s genuinely a very good idea (Check out these Class A RV rentals) – it’s best to stay at a campground from time to time. If you do, you get to hook up your RV at a park and power it up for the duration of your stay there.
That’ll make the battery last a lot longer and you won’t have to worry about losing power to the fridge or stove while you’re on the road.
You can also make use of the on site facilities at these parks. That usually means you’re able to use the bathroom without any worry, and if you’ve been complaining about the lack of shower space in the van, you’ll love having a proper cubicle to use!
Give Yourself an Extra Day
Even with a very carefully planned itinerary, if you’re on the road, things can go wrong. You can be delayed by traffic, there’s a chance your tyre might burst, and you could even be involved in an accident.
It’s scary to think about, but it’s important to consider at this point in your travel plan.
Because of that, you’re going to want to give yourself a bit more time than you think you need. If you’re going away for five days, for example, try to keep the things you do on the last day to a limit.
Say you’re planning to visit three sights before you make your way home – cut that down to two, just in case you need a couple more hours to keep track.
If you’re a first time road tripper, make sure you remember this advice when planning.
