If you like to watch really old movies like I do, or grew up on them like I did, then you’ll recognize that familiar accent that all the older actresses used. It’s called the mid-atlantic accent and it has come up again in yet another video. It was developed by diction professionals in Hollywood to accommodate the primitive recording equipment of the time and eventually fell out of use by the 1960s. No one really uses it anymore. It’s a linguistic portmanteau of British and Northeastern accents that would be pleasing to the hear and easy to record. Explore more about this funny sounding accent in this fun video.
