The task of looking after your car is even harder these days, not just because we don’t necessarily have the time to do it, but we don’t have the skills. There are those who have the “give it a go” approach when it comes to upgrading cars and getting under the hood, but the fact is that we’re also scared to make a mistake. It’s easy to see why when we have very little in the way of knowledge. This is why prolonging the life of your car in less-known ways that’s not servicing, cleaning, or even rotating your tires means finding things that you can do, so let’s show you what they are:
Wax Your Vehicle
Applying a coat of wax to your vehicle’s exterior every six months is a very simple but effective thing because it forms a protective seal against environmental factors such as UV rays, pollutants, and other harmful elements that can degrade your car’s paint over time. Having an auto body repair shop available to help with the major issues can certainly help, but with regards to things like rust and corrosion, maintaining your vehicle’s exterior is absolutely pivotal. Rust is car cancer, and it can significantly impact your vehicle’s structural integrity and its longevity.
Use Your Air Conditioning
Some people don’t use their air conditioning as much as they should, either because they think it uses more energy and therefore more fuel, or because they’re trying to save money. In fact, regular use of the air conditioning system, even during colder months, can help to maintain your car’s efficiency and longevity. When you use your air conditioning regularly, it will maintain the integrity of the hoses and seals, which stops them from cracking and/or drying out. It prevents refrigerant gas leaks and keeps the system’s components lubricated. What’s more, using the air conditioning can remove excess moisture from the inside of the car, which can reduce the likelihood of mold and mildew growth. If you’ve got little kids in the car, you don’t want them breathing all of that in!
Change the Filters
Regularly replacing your air and oil filters is critical for your engine’s health. The air filter works to prevent dust, debris, and other types of contaminants from entering the engine. The oil filter removes the impurities from the engine oil. Therefore, if you have clean filters, your engine is going to receive clean air and oil, optimizing its performance and longevity. What’s more, by preventing debris from damaging the engine, you are avoiding potentially costly repairs and extending the vehicle’s lifespan.
Park in a Garage or Shaded Area
We’ve already talked about UV rays and how they can cause paint to fade, but they can also damage the rubber components like the tires and seals. Any rapid temperature changes and moisture can result in various parts of the car aging prematurely. Parking in a protected area like your garage or under shade is going to reduce the stress on the car’s exterior and the interior components, therefore extending the lifespan.
Check and Maintain Proper Tire Pressure
This is something we’re all guilty of not doing, but we have to remember that properly inflated tires ensure even wear, reduce engine strain, and improve fuel efficiency. If your tires are underinflated, you’re going to spend more money on fuel, but also overinflated tires can result in a harsher ride and reduced traction.
Have an Even Mix of Antifreeze and Water in the Coolant System
The proper ratio of antifreeze to water in the car’s coolant system is 50/50. This is crucial for the engine in both summer and winter, as it will prevent it from freezing during winter months and overheating during the summer. This balance will also prevent corrosion within the cooling system. If this is left unchecked, it means expensive repairs. Regularly checking and maintaining this ratio is going to extend the lifespan of the vehicle.
Drive Economically
Ensuring you drive economically with smooth acceleration, braking, and steering, maintaining steady speeds, avoiding excessive speed, and reducing vehicle weight are all critical so you can reduce wear and tear on various components.
There are many different ways to look after your car, and prolonging its longevity is critical, particularly for those keeping their eye on cost. The fact is that we can all do little things that can maximize our vehicle in the long run. If you ever feel unsure about something, that’s what a mechanic is for, but rather than thinking you have no idea how to fix issues with cars, there are a number of simple things that you can absolutely do by yourself.
