Modern society has a very odd view of the recent past. People think many of the Victorian social mores and sexual hang-ups as weird and odd. The emphasis on manners and good breeding seem archaic. But the realities of Victorian and Edwardian societies were very different from the pop culture interpretations of those times. People in the 18th and 19th centuries were not a bunch of up-tight, anal retentive, prissy, picky-about-manners folks. They just handled things with a little more grace and ease. Society was not as focused on sex and they valued different parts of the body. Women did quite a few things. They did not sit around on fainting couches waiting for a man to come around. Especially later in the century, women were in sports, rode bikes, and went on adventures of all sorts.
In this video, we’re going to learn about the reality of women in the 19th century and break down a few myths. This video comes from someone who specializes in the clothing of the past and does delightful re-enactments.
