You know that I am no fan of electric cars. The issue with range is a big one and the effect that they are having and will continue to have on our power grid is truly terrifying. However, I’m posting this video to show not only why electric cars are bad but also to talk about how all the new urbanists are anti-car. Now, that’s where I diverge from the new urbanism. I’m all for walkable downtowns and making the suburbs more dense and walkable, but to blame everything on cars (they take up too much space, too much is devoted to them, and they are bad for cities) is just short-sighted. The reality is that public transportation is never going to be able to compete with point-to-point transit. If we are going to rebuild America’s cities, then we’re going to have to deal with cars whether we like it or not. Banning all cars is not a solution. Cars have far too many uses. This includes trips during weather or for people who can’t walk or bike (I should say that I really hate anything with fewer than three wheels).
